My PPF is
getting up there! The Indian situation is really bugging me and now 9 deaths in Indo in the news thread. I would say I am about a 7.5

This time of year
has always seen increases in Egypt and we have also voiced concern in the past that there were cases in India et al which were going unreported - until now.

If we get any reports of (even suspected) cases in other african countries, I will be checking the shutters are ready to nail up - this is the worst we have seen it since I can remember - and that is now 3 years of monitoring and observing.

Hi AnnieB,
We've been watching the Australian Open over the past week, and I've thought of you.  I certainly wish we had even a hint of warm weather here like you all are having!

Hi Michelle in OK
We get similar weather to Australia here in New Zealand and we are certainly enjoying a delightful summer.

Hence my very slow response to your comment - I am making the most of the lovely days to play golf and garden :-)

my PPF
Definitely going up after reading in today's Hindustan Times that there are "many deaths of dogs and doves" in the flu hit areas. They are preparing for a "potential human disaster" and ordering ventilators, etc. So, probably a 7.5 because I am not anywhere near prepared.  Time to take inventory and hit Costco.

India
Is puckering me a bit

3 - Pre Flight Check
There is always a fight somewhere.
I've heard the bell (CDC, President, HHS, OSHA)
Just making sure my stuff is in order.

Its been a long marathon so far, but once launched and flying the "marathon" will seem like "the good quiet times"

Later if H5N1 tarkets my area and locks on that will be the long marathon where min will seem like hours. Days will seem like years.

Hoping not to eject. Not expecting rescue, even from the group living by the motto "That others may live"

Oremus's PPF lists are a scream :-)
Always guaranteed to lower my PPF a little. Thanks for the giggle!

Might I Suggest a Level 11?
A blinding flash, a cloud of dust, a mushroom cloud and an endless winter?

Not as bad as the Pakistan cluster n/t

All 'safety concerns' are hypothetical.  If not, they'd be called side effects...

I'm still at 3
I still firmly believe I could be at 9 or 10 in short order, depending on the news, but until that news comes, I'm around 3.

I don't really know why. Things look very bad out there, but things have looked bad before, and perhaps worse before. (Garut erupted when I was a newbie with barely 20 lbs of rice and 15 pounds of lentils and beans to my name.) I guess I'm just jaded now -- or too tired to get too excited until the starting gun goes off. That jadedness (if that's a word at all) is both good and bad. Good for feeling calm, bad for the question sometimes in the back of my head about whether I'll really be ready when the gun goes off.

4.5, but ready to go to 8 at any time.
With all the aids, the inadequate medical system, and lack of compassion for the poor in India, the has really got my ears up.

On a side note, I have noticed the number of people on this site has really jumped the last few weeks.

PPF
2.5, until we get reports of sustained h2h it will stay at 2.5, keep checking preps, rotating, adding where necessary. Staying puckered just takes too much energy, after 3 years prepping is a way of life now for me with no need for extraordinary concerns until something actually happens.

Know the procedures on board an aircraft carrier; served for 4 years!
I state the following:

If you have started to prep then you understand the threat and are prepared to react, thus you have launched your aircraft "To get there first with the most..." I say if you have spent a dollar or more you have launched your aircraft!

 Hmm. I see your point.

I'm still checking the air craft. Making sure things work. Engines fire up, wings work. comm link good and maps are in place.

Once we launch the family is on our own and consuming rescources till either a mid-air refuel, safe landing or die trying. Where am I going to eject to that is safe?

Guess the family could eject and hide out for a while but the current options are few.

Four but ready to double
The goings on in India could just be badly contained bird flu in birds with seasonal flu in humans, but we might be running out of luck and time. The limited resources and low efficiency of public health in India is not a confidence builder. They have a higher infant mortality rate than Bangladesh does. Let's hope we stay lucky because as the recent case of the Pakistani going back home (and visiting with an H5N1 infected family member) and then returning to NY showed, there are poor procedures to catch someone who might get infected and travel. The Indian diaspora is large and an outbreak of efficiently transmissible flu would spread rapidly and widely.

It's not knowing
that increases my ppf.  Knowing that this is "it" as opposed to suspecting that this is "it" would actually lower my ppf.  With knowledge I can take action.

To calm the wife buy cases of chocolate, to calm the husband buy cases of booze, and to calm the children...... heck the booze and chocolate should work.

Very unsettled
I'm always saying my PPF is around 2-4 on these PPF diaries.  It's still in that range but the recent uptick in Indo and the happenings in West Bengal have me feeling that we may not be hearing about some significant stuff going on.  We've had 4 deaths in 4 or 5 days in Indo, is that right?  That's a lot per week.  Computing that, you would think they had just gotten their first death around August of last year at that rate.  My gut tells me it should be up a notch now.

Meteorologist in Florida!?!  Now we're talkin'!!!

in a holding pattern on the pre-flight checklist level
looking over/updating the inventory, making notes on some Kathy in FLA recipes in a "coobook" I printed out put together that I call Meals from the Pantry (have given to a few people who were intrigued- billed it as a collection of money saving recipes- hey, whatever works- good reaction too)and heading for wallyworld tomorrow replenish a few shorter shelf life items I've been using up to assist the rotation of stock.

up a notch now
all week I have been feeling a bit uneasy.  each day I have picked up odds & ends.  been waiting on a few things to go on sale to restock but think I will just skip the sale and make a major run Sat

My PPF just went up a notch
I do not like hearing about cases from WHO before hearing about them from any other source, especially given the lack of information about the earlier case (SA). I don't think tinfoil suits me, so I don't wear it much, but I do wonder what else we're not hearing.

Seems that many times
the first we hear of a case is the announcement by WHO or some gov't (like Indo) that someone has died.

I don't think that's because the newshounds aren't looking hard enough - I think it's because somebody is working hard enough to keep the news from getting out about illnesses prior to having to make a death announcement.

[ Parent ]
Really? Which cases are you thinking of?
Maybe I'm just more aware now than I was before I started tracking. But, though I've many times noticed that we don't hear about cases until they're dead, I don't recall another case where the WHO announcement was the first indication. That's really effective news management.

[ Parent ]
Not sure . . .
about WHO - I'm sick as a dog myself and not thinking too clearly - but it does seem as if many Indo cases the first we hear of them is an announcement of death by the Indo gov't.

[ Parent ]
You're probably right
I think I'd have noticed WHO being first, but I wouldn't have noticed if it was Indo govt as opposed to an Indo news source getting info not from their government. Get better soon!
