Florida Window and door protection.

If you live in Florida listen up.  The state has a program to help pay for securing your windows and doors on your home for wind protection during storms.
RICHARD-FL :: Florida Window and door protection.
You will need to go to MyFlorida.com and as a resident look under "emergency preparation, and Hurricanes".

You get a free inspection of your roof, walls, windows, and doors.  When you get the results you can submit in for  up to $5,000.00 grant to fix the problems.  That is FREE MONEY.

I submitted mine in January had the inspection in January, and just last week submitted in for the grant.  According to their information, I should get between $4,500.00 and %5,000.oo grant.

Once you get the grant money you will be given a list of companies who will fix the problems you are having up to the grant amount.  Any thing over you pay for.  I need window coverings (Metal)

The last good thing is your insurance will go down about 30% once they have been told about it.

Hmm. guess this would also help if things turned nasty during a pandemic. Great Post - Thanks. n/t

huh?
Sounds good. But I've searched through that website thoroughly and was unable to find anything about it. Do you have an actual link you can offer or is it possible that the program is simply defunct?

The inspection process
When they come to inspect your house ask them questions.

I had to make a decision on which items I wanted fixed.  A new garage door or get the windows covered.  My choice is window covers.

It will increase my security 100% around the house.  I plan on putting up my metal shutters once BF arrives in country or WHO goes to 5/6.  I will leave them on on all windows except my back yard which has a privacy 6" fence around it.

I have checked with my insurance company and they have already reduced my insurance by 20% and upon my getting the windows done, they will increase that to 30%.  Not bad...

I'm going to make a note in the Florida page.

Thanks for the tip. When I
had plywood on another house I'd owned, I cut two holes with a 2" hole saw into the wood, staggered and at two different levels. It did not compromise the integrity but allowed myself and my much shorter wife to look outside, plus it let some much needed light in.

I'm assuming I need to pay for these fixes up front and hopefully get a check later? Is that correct?

Who pays for these fixes
The way it works depends on how much of a grant you get.  The tell you how much and give you a list of companies who can do the work,  there are a lot of them so you get a good choice.

The company then comes out recheck the inspection if everything is OK they will use the grant money and bill you for the rest.  The largest grant is $5,000.00 which I was told would pay to have all 14 windows in my house  (I have 3 big ones with the 1/2 moon shape top). It will still have some left over.
