No cause for alarm on swine-flu: [Philippine Provincial Veterinarian
Antonio Mutia

The Negros Oriental Veterinary Office has cautioned the public against raising undue panic over fresh reports of an outbreak of swine flu, that led to over 100 suspected deaths related to it in Mexico.

The warning came as world governments are racing to undertake measures to prevent the spread of the communicable disease and avoid a pandemic and global hysteria, after suspected swine flu cases were also reported in Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

Provincial veterinarian Dr. Antonio Mutia yesterday said that the Philippines is still swine flu free, and that, it is still safe to eat pork.

"There is no cause for public alarm, but people must take extra care in the preparation and cooking of pork as there are other forms of contamination," Mutia said.

He added that the PVO does not even have enough information yet on the swine flu, a new virus strain that is affecting humans, and that, he is looking at improving an anti-swine flu contingency plan once his office receives a directive from concerned agencies.

He said he is anticipating that within the week, the Department of Health and other line agencies would have crafted measures in anticipation of possible swine flu outbreak in the country.

Nigeria allays fears over outbreak of swine flu

32 minutes ago (9:00 a.m. EDT, April 28, 2009)

LAGOS (AFP) - Nigeria's health authorities on Tuesday claimed they were ready to cope with an outbreak of swine flu in the oil-rich west African country of 140 million inhabitants.

"No cause for alarm" is the same as "Don't bother to do anything; it'll blow over."
So TPTB have everything under control, and they're not asking us to do anything special (just wash our hands, cover coughing and sneezing, and stay home if ill). Is that credible?  I think people are worried anyway; we see the numbers climbing.  Wouldn't it be useful to tell us that it could get worse, and there are preparations we should make?  It's hard to believe they don't think we're capable of hearing the truth.  They'd rather let us get smacked in the head with that 2x4 later and be desperate.  Doesn't the Department of Homeland Security have some advisers who can see trouble coming?

"The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it."  Flannery O'Connor

But some are saying it could get worse
Some are saying that we should expect to see deaths in the US as a result of this outbreak - they're not making any bones about seeing it get worse.  Some are saying that because it's the end of traditional flu season, we may get a brief respite until fall and then get hit with a much worse scenario.  I've heard it several times just today.

Trouble is, they're intermixing that message in with the wash your hands and everything will be just wonderful message - and people hear what they want to hear.

I think they see plenty of trouble coming, but they don't have a clue what to do at this point.  Maybe they should try reading some of the flubie sites - we could give 'em plenty of ideas what to do now.

For starters, they could tell physicians to start writing Tamiflu scripts hand over fist, and they could tell people to stock up on OTC meds, water, water purifiers, food . . .

We all know how the list reads.  I don't really understand why they don't know how it reads.  Or why they don't want us to read it - whichever.

I do know that everywhere I listen I'm getting that mixed message about how many new cases there are daily, how we should expect deaths in the US as a result of the disease, and then they break into a chorus of "don't worry, be happy", and suddenly I'm so angry that happy couldn't enter into it if you paid me . . .

I wish a vendor such as mredepot would publish figures reflecting how many orders have been placed in the past week using the "fluwikie" discount code - that might give 'em a clue as to someplace to start.  I'd wager there have been a massive amount of orders placed using that code since the end of last week - mine among them.

I'd always said when I got worried past a certain point I'd order up a case of that canned bacon and another case of pre-cooked meat.  I did that Saturday.

I've also started filling the chest freezer with loaves of bread . . . bread that's been frozen isn't as good as bread fresh off the shelf, but it's a whole lot better than no bread at all.  Next, I find the recipe book for the bread machine and go buy about 50 pounds of bread flower and a whole bunch of yeast . . . I've already stashed away 20 boxes of saltines and several csses of brown bread in a can . . . peanut butter and tune are both improved by having some bread to go with.

I expect we might need to shelter in place for a while before the grid goes down (if it goes down).  That bread in the freezer or out of the machine might come in real handy.
If the disease progresses at its current pace, I may be very reluctant to walk into the neighborhood grocery store within a week.  What I'm seeing is an increase that seems almost exponential - but when I hear that word used on CNN, I'll bet it means the SHHTF for real and true.

Wonderland Indeed!
This morning I heard a Doctor on our public radio station talking about the fact that the only reason we are catching all of these Swine Flu Illness' is that we are checking and we wouldn't have noticed anything if the media weren't making such a big deal about it. I really wished I'd been able to call the program and ask the Dr. if he knew when flu season peaked, but I was on the highway!

I also particularly like this new reference to influenza deaths attributed to seasonal flu. It gives the impression that this is nothing, it happens all the time and we just don't usually notice it.

See CNN homepage, headline: Regular flu has killed thousands in 2009

But they are prepared
These are politicians.  They are prepared to ensure that they remain in power.  Whether other people live or die is not important.

But they are prepared
So true!  It won't start upsetting anyone in power until it affects their wallets or they are somehow blamed for something.
