Old forum closing for renovations Tuesday evening

by: pogge

Mon Nov 27, 2006 at 17:19:21 PM EST

Tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at around 9pm I'm going to make the old forum read-only for a while so I can upgrade the software without blowing up the internets. I've learned to announce these things in as many places as I can think of.

All things being equal it should only take about an hour and when we reopen, we'll have a new spam control feature. You remember spam, don't you? I've already posted a thread over there and I'll update that after the upgrade to hit the high points.

There's nothing on the flip.

Experiment: Recent Diaries moved up over Recommended Diaries box. Which is better?

Personally I like Recommended over Recent, but it doesn't really matter to me.

Rec on top
I like the Recomended over the Recent because Recent turns over so fast. I'd like to see a MUCH bigger Recommended, though.  Is this possible through the personal settings?

no, but i can increase it...
let's get more comments...

...and don't forget that pushes the "recent diaries" down
even further.

Rec over Recent
Well, I have my "Recents" set at 99 so that pushes the "Recommended" waaaay down there... so I have to go past even the really old ones to get to Recommended! Therein the preference. :-)

[ Parent ]
i set recent to 15
that seems workable.

[ Parent ]
I like recent over recommended, it seems
like really important news/facts can get lost in the shuffle without the ability to bump (but maybe I just haven't become aware of all the new features yet).

you can also change how many recent diaries you see
in your profile on the personal page, under display pref.

[ Parent ]
well that is good to know--I am going to try that! (n/t)

[ Parent ]
in personal page > profiles > display prefs
change the 'subject diaries" number to whatever number you want the recent diaries box to be.

[ Parent ]
worked like a charm! (n/t)

Recent over recommended
I like recent diaries first, then recommended.  I find myself scrolling past recommended diaries to get to recent ones.  I like to see what's new.

"The internets?"
The truth is out. Pogge is W. ;)

pogge is Canadian
but the 'internets' is now all over the internets.

[ Parent ]
Recent over recommended
But then, you knew that, didn't you?

Thanks for the experiment!

Recent vs. Recommended
Definitely Recent on top.

RE: recent vs recommended
no doubt, recent over recommended.

recent over recomended
yes if the shtf I want to know asap and besides when I am keeping up with the wiki I like to see the new posts fast. it kida reminds me of what old yeller is like. Oh and since I haven't said it yet... thanks to all of you for all the great work you have done on the new site. it will take some getting used to, but I know we will all wonder how we ever got along without it.

Natural selection is at work all the time.

Recommended over Recent
I can always get a list of the most recent by using the "Diaries" option in the Menu (top right)

Recent over Recommended has my vote n/t

well it's unanimous...
...there's no agreement!  ;-)

The old forum is now open again.
I have a post summarizing the changes on this thread.

done
looks like they (pogge0 redid the old forum.
It has a nice little code to reduce spam and it has the right time now.

I am happy.  :)

Be Prepared

that "exact time" was almost as good as the spam control
Almost!
