H1N1(Swine Flu): Trick or Treat? What are you doing about Halloween & H1N1?

This Halloween we have something more than scary costumes and spooky haunted houses to be concerned about...the H1N1 flu virus is a real threat this Halloween.  There are no studies (at least that I am aware of) on disease transmission and Halloween candy or costumes however there are some common sense things that can be done to make the holiday a bit safer for all of us.  We need to think about how we handle Halloween parties or trick-or-treating for candy, with the goal of minimizing the risk of contracting H1N1.

I'm not too worried about the trick-or-treating.
Kids will be outside and I'll spend maybe 20 seconds or less tossing some candy in their bags. For the kids receiving the candy, I think they will be okay. Unless some adult handing out candy coughes in their face or right on the candy, I don't see too much risk there.

The risk may be in the kids spending an evening with other kids. I would think Halloween parties may be an issue if H1N1 is prevelant in local schools. Also, if parents are driving groups of kids to go trick-or-treating there may be some transmission while in the car. At this point, I think the kids are much more likely to get H1N1 in school or at after-school activities than trick-or-treating.

No little hands in the candy bowl this year!!
I'll be doling out the candy myself....
