Ukraine

I've been fairly relaxed about the flu for months. Yes, it can be deadly - but for relatively few. Most of the folks I know, including me and my family, have now had it. I was hoping to see levels of infection for our community drop off and fade into the strange history of 2009.

News from the Ukraine, however, is very concerning (to quote Niman). WTF? Is this the mutation we've been dreading? Add to that the increased levels of H5N1 infections among people in Egypt, etc., and I can't say that I'm relaxed any more. Durn it, I guess we're going to have to continue prepping.

It feels like Russian roulette...

... reading about these healthy people who suddenly die in a few days, after not seeming very sick! I voted "limiting public contact" because I have been staying away from parties, groups, crowded shopping areas, as I watch Oregon hospitalizations go up in leaps and bounds daily! Especially since there is no news reporting -- it feels like a news blackout here... and since they avidly report single car accidents (even when there is no fatality), I totally don't buy the "not news" response I'm getting from reporters that I email. It's frustrating, and it makes it more scary to me that I can't "see" where to avoid. So I just have to generally cut down. My supplies remain topped off. :-}

What's coming out of the Ukraine

(Along with what isn't coming out from there) is so confused, and so tainted by agendas, and so subject to spin regardless of their local political issues; that I'm not letting it affect my "ppf" at all. I'm no more, nor less, worried than I was before the Ukraine headlines started popping.

I don't see how you could look at the government's own numbers and wonder at what is going on there. They have gone from 191k to 969k reported ILI/ARDS infections in seven days.

And if nothing has changed, why hasn't the WHO released the Ukraine sequences? I hope it is a tempest in a teapot, but signs point to "no".

Why I change my level of PPF

I went from a 4 back to a 3.  Why?  Because the society breakdown I expected, has not happened (Yet).  People or family members get the flu and people adjust their patterns of living for a few days or weeks, until it disappears.  

I expected after reading about the 1918 flu pandemic, to have mass hysteria by thousands of people, and that the government would fail to control this hysteria. It is one of the key problems, (I thought).

I took the experience from Katerina and the twin towers, where the government failed - - due to the lack of common sense approach to solve the problems.

I'm surprised and happy.

Now if H5N1 comes around then look out!

It is hard to say

I always try to hope for the best, yet prepare for the worst. I believe that we are being lied to by goverments in general, based on past performance. I have little doubt that officials and their families are well taken care of as they explain that all is well, nothing to see here, don't panic please....... I am concerned. All I am doing is preparing as if we will be hit within the next three months. I buy a few extra cans of food every week. nothing spectacular. You are your own maker of your future. JonC
