H1N1(Swine Flu): Could Getting A Cold Prevent You From Getting The Flu?

Two articles reviewed on PROMED this morning really caught my attention... could catching a "cold" actually help ward off H11N1?  This idea of viral interference is really interesting.

Very interesting, but could we please have the source links for the two stories?
When articles are mentioned it is our practice to put the source links for the original articles.

In my opinion, a link to your personal blog does not suffice.

Thank you for pointing out this research.
I didn't see anything in the blog from ProMed but the other research articles are intriguing.  If someone can design a vaccine to give us a harmless "cold" to prevent the flu from taking hold, that sounds good to me, I think.  Although that seems to mean that we'd have to be in a continual state of virus-fighting instead of having antibodies that lie in our bodies quietly until influenza virus presents itself, because it's the simultaneity that works, it seems.  Who can predict exactly when we'd get infected by influenza and need to have a cold already in our bodies?   Still, the graphs are thought-provoking.

This is an area that i am very interested in.  I have articles going back decades where viral interference is suspected but not proven.  However we finally have the tools (sensitive and specific laboratory tests) and we may get an answer.  However I want to caution everyone.  Even if true, the immunity is not long lasting and sometimes the preceding viral infection makes the situation worse not better.  A specific vaccine such as the pandemic H1N1 vaccine remains your best bet for immunity.
