I cannot believe how the news media is trying to spin this story, right in my own backyard!
Repost:
Duluth, Minnesota:
SMDC officials confirmed Monday that five of the six dead were adults while one was a child. All the flu-associated deaths occurred in November.

http://www.duluthnewstribune.c...

The local TV news reported tonight that six people had died of H1N1 in Duluth, MN.  I live here and had not heard of any deaths locally until tonight's TV news story.  I am quite sure the TV newscaster said the all deaths occurred in the PAST WEEK.  After the TV news report I went to the internet to get more information.  I found the above story on the local newspaper's website. The printed article seemed vague and conflicted with what I had just heard on TV. I also wondered why I hadn't heard of deaths locally until now. Its shocking to see the news media tip-toeing around the truth and trying to spin this story, right in my own backyard!
If this happening in a relatively small town in Minnesota, what in the H--L is really going on around the rest of the country or world for that matter?

Taiwan: confirmation of death of 4 yr old girl from H1N1
Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA)

A four-year-old girl in the southern county of Tainan has died of influenza A(H1N1) , the youngest patient to succumb to the new flu strain in Taiwan, health authorities said Tuesday.

The victim, who had no history of underlying disease, was treated with anti-viral drugs after coming down with the flu early this month, according to Chou Jih-haw, deputy director-general of the Centers for Disease Control.

Swine flu recedes in Minn.; 6 new deaths confirmed

"I anticipate that we may well have another several weeks of activity, but I think it's fair to say that we have peaked, as long as everyone takes really good precautions over Thanksgiving," state epidemiologist Ruth Lynfield said.

2 things about deaths
1. reporting lags
2. sick patients can take weeks to die (very sick patients can recover but be in hospital for weeks), so total cases can recede while deaths go up.

WHO: Possible Tamiflu resistance
WHO Selidiki Flu Babi By editorial staff of 25/11/2009 @ 00:37

Geneva, - the Organisation of the Health of the World (WHO) researched the report in England and the USA that the virus of pig flu possibly developed the opposition to Tamiflu to the person with the system of body immunity that was pressed, said the spokesperson WHO.

The Perlindungan agency of the English Health (HPA) stated five cases was confirmed in Wales about parents who were infected by the virus H1N1 that kept against Oseltamivir --the generic name of medicine antivirus Tamiflu keluargan Roche and Gilead Sciences Inc, as being quoted from Reuters.

All these patients had the serious condition that pressed their system of body immunity, that could give the virus the opportunity better than normally to develop endurance, said HPA. The series of the virus that kept this medicine perhaps spread from the person to the person.

"We saw the report, we must research him," said the spokesperson WHO Thomas Abraham in Geneva, on Tuesday. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week also reported four cases H1N1 that kept against Tamiflu in Duke University Hospital in North Carolina.

All the patients it was said were sick serious with the system of body immunity that was threatened and the other condition medical that was very complicated. This WHO spokesperson said the two reports involved endurance of Tamiflu to the person who had the system of body immunity that really was pressed. "We will see whether we must carry out the additional action in order to protects the patient's susceptible group."

That possibly was significant that they faced the risk that was bigger compared with the other person, said Abraham. The person with the system of body immunity that was pressed, like them who underwent chemotherapy or suffered the HIV, be more likely to to suffer was sick because tertular.

WHO beforehand reported several cases of the plague virus that kept against Oseltamivir but said all the cases were rare. Abraham, that was asked whether the case in Wales will become that was first the spread person-to-person, answered, "To The Best Of that was known by me had the possibility but that had not been seen definitely".

H1N1, the combination between the pig virus, birds and humankind, killed at least 6,700 people all over the world, said WHO. Kebanyakan the person suffered the minor sign like pain or the fever, but recovered without the special maintenance, he said.

Separately, WHO stated the organisation was investigating whether the mutation in the series of influenza H1N1, that was detected just recently in Norway last week, resulting in the sign worst in their circle that was infected. Norwegian Institute of Public Health, last Friday, stated the mutation could influence this virus capacity to enter more in again to the respiratory system, so as result in was sick that was more serious

"This was the big problem that was researched by us," said Abraham. "If the mutation in fact was linked with the serious case, then we really must know concerning that." This possibly became the sign. We must investigate, he said. "Setakat this, there were no proof concerning special relations with the serious case." As far as this is concerned, medicine antivirus and the vaccine has effective warded off the form of the mutation, he said.

Currently had four cases of the virus that bermutasi to the patient in Norway, followed the similar mutation in the virus H1N1 that circled in several other countries since April, he said. This other country was Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine and the United States. (Antara News)

Canada - GSK says still no answer on whether H1N1 vaccine batch triggers more reaction
another excellent article from Helen Branswell

http://www.google.com/hostedne...

TORONTO - The investigation into whether a batch of H1N1 vaccine may have triggered a higher-than-normal rate of allergic reactions hasn't yet come up with answers, vaccine manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline said Tuesday.

And health officials in Quebec said they are still trying to determine if the death of an elderly man who died of anaphylaxis after receiving a pandemic flu shot was triggered or hastened by the vaccination.

"Investigations being undertaken by GSK, Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) have not yet been completed," GSK spokesperson Megan Spoore said in an email about the pulled batch of vaccine.

The lot, No. A80CA007A, comprised 172,000 doses of vaccine that were shipped last month to British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.

Quebec did not receive vaccine from the batch under investigation.

COMMENT: if this piece was from anyone else, I would have suspected bad reporting.  As it is, since it is from Helen Branswell, I can only conclude that health officials in Quebec are as clueless as anyone can imagine.  Like, is there such as thing as anaphylaxis hastened by vaccination?  That is different from triggered by vaccination?  Like how?  The guy was having an anaphylactic reaction already from some other cause, and, in the middle of that, someone vaccinated him???

But, irrespective of that, we now know that the one person known to have died from anaphylaxis did not receive a dose from the suspected batch of vaccine.

All 'safety concerns' are hypothetical.  If not, they'd be called side effects...

Hastened modifies death, not anaphylaxis
The sentence is actually questioning whether his death was triggered or hastened as a result of the vaccine.

[ Parent ]
well, ok, but in that case
the question becomes, hastened as compared to what?  Was this person terminally ill?  Or just chronically ill?  Even very seriously ill patients are not necessarily likely to die in the short term.  So the word or rather the concept of 'hastened' is somewhat unclear.

I mean, it's possible, theoretically, to extrapolate and say, since everyone is going to die someday anyway, then anything that killed someone 'only' hastened that process.  I'm not just being pedantic - semantics is important because it reflects official attitude to the issue. Do they believe this was an inevitable death (inevitable in the short term) which was 'only' somewhat brought forward (ie hastened) by the anaphylaxis?  If not, then this death was triggered by anaphylaxis, and not just hastened, even if this person had underlying conditions that made him/her more likely to die from anaphylaxis.

All 'safety concerns' are hypothetical.  If not, they'd be called side effects...

China: 8 cases of swine flu mutation.
Chinese expert warns of H1N1 and H5N1 pandemic mutation
With H1N1 mutations seen in Norway and noted in several countries, a Chinese expert issues a warning on the potential for a superbug combination of bird flu and swine flu.

As mutating viruses go, influenza species are notorious for making sloppy copies of themselves - and this behavior presents a challenge to public health officials who are charged with containing more dangerous and widespread disease. On Wednesday, a Chinese disease expert spoke out on the possibility of a dangerous combination between a more dangerous H1N1 swine flu virus mutation and China's endemic H5N1 bird flu species.

A swap in genetic code between these two dangerous viruses could create a superbug pandemic with the potential to wipe out the majority of human populations worldwide.
"China, as you know, is different from other countries. Inside China, H5N1 has been existing for some time, so if there is really a reassortment between H1N1 and H5N1, it will be a disaster,"
Zhong Nanshan, director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases in China's southern Guangdong province told Reuters. Continued: http://www.digitaljournal.com/...

(Note: Hmmmmm, the Chinese always make me nervous with these kind of announcements, especially now since they are admitting to finding a mutation in the H1N1 virus. The flu situation in China needs to be very carefully watched!)

in so far as one can actually watch anything in China from the outside.

Yeah - the last time they shifted story lines, the crisis had already started!
They insisted they had caught all the flu just before they had to release news of thousands of cases, spreading wildly. They didn't report the plague situation until they'd had to cordon off the area... so, are they telling us this has already started? I sure hope not!!

Keep the information coming!

This does not improve the comfort level
BEIJING - China has detected eight cases of swine flu mutation, a health official said Wednesday, amid longstanding concerns among scientists that the virus could change into a more dangerous form.

Last week, the World Health Organization said it was investigating samples of variant swine flu linked to two deaths in Norway.

But Shu Yuelong, director of the Chinese National Influenza Center, told the official Xinhua News Agency that the mutated swine flu virus found China has shown an "isolated" spread in the mainland, is not resistant to drugs and can be prevented by vaccines.

flash fire
Flublogia has been flashed into widespread panic with the developing mutation story out of Ukraine Norway, Russia, North Carolina, Nacadoches, Iowa, etc.

Some of it is hyperbole, alot of CRAAAZZZAAY speculation about The Peoples Republic of China sending out a planet killer slate-wiping master virus that initiates the long anticipated "die-off". My only response to this is - open your mouth and let me check you for fever. Also, you might want to put some chicken soup on to warm.  Such fevered non-rational speculation.

There is PLENTY of natural possibilities for breeding this superbug in our deeply misguided industrial agricultural systems (pig CAFOs).  No need to see a communist plot.  Now, the communists might HAVE plots, sure. But I would, as a scientist, I have to really first blame our crappy profit driven animal husbandry practices.

I too do not like seeing media reports that the Chinese gov is talking about H1N1/H5N1 crosses. They have no need to say this unless they want to start conditioning the media (for?).

I cant see the Chinese desiring panic.

Its hard to decipher Chinese, WHO, CDC, and FDA double speak.  I try to let an analysis of motivation guide me but always with an appreciation for knowing that I only know a small part of the story.

To tell you all the truth, I am more worried about Q1 2010 market crash and the next wave of the collapse.  It might be a stochastic tipping point past which many complex interlocked and poorly understood systems spontaneously depolymerize.

[ Parent ]
"flashed into widespread panic??"
Don't know what part of flublogia you are referring to as I don't visit other forums. I haven't seen any panic here on Fluwiki. I certainly don't think anyone here thinks that China has sent out "a planet killer slate-wiping master virus that initiates the long anticipated "die-off". I do worry about China covering up real disease outbreaks and the facts on such incidents. I just don't trust them.....period.

Chinese warning is not a new one...
spoke out on the possibility of a dangerous combination between a more dangerous H1N1 swine flu virus mutation and China's endemic H5N1 bird flu species

Regardless of what China is withholding or not, hasn't this combination always been a concern ever since H1N1 came about? Isn't it something that, I would hope, WHO, CDC, TPTB would already be working on as it isn't out of the realm of possibility even if it isn't a...probability.

This article goes back to April in Indonesia and there's been many since then:

Origin is new, not warning itself
The only thing new about this is that it originates with the Chinese.  WHO said pretty much the same thing just yesterday.

It's not what was said, it is who said it.

[ Parent ]
The Chinese and WHO
Both have now said (in the last day or so) that the concern is a mingling of H5N1 with H1N1.  This was said in the story yesterday about WHO concern regarding H5N1 resurgence.

One comment I could handle . . . but when WHO and the Chinese both express the same concern, I sit up and pay attention.

[ Parent ]
Remember The Stages Of Public Opinion?
Stage One is Dawning Awareness - the WHO and China are aware that this has already happened. They are breaking the news gently.

First we are told about a "Possibility", then we will be told about an "Isolated case", then it becomes "Sporadic" and then.........

Perhaps this is why the Department of Defence Raised its Pandemic Alert phase  for the Pacific Command Three weeks ago?

[ Parent ]
You're describing an old story
Commonly known as "the cat fell off the roof".

People leave for vacation, ask neighbors to take care of the cat.  Before the people are even out of town, the cat climbs onto the roof, falls off, and dies.

Neighbors call vacationers and say "Not to worry, but the cat fell off the roof.  We're taking cat to vet".

Next communication is,  "Hate to tell you, but vet says cat needs to be hospitalized for a few days, but will be ok, not to worry".

Next comes, "So sorry to tell you the cat's no better after a few days - vet says complications, but cat will be ok, no problem".

Last communication reads, "So so sorry to tell you the vet was unable to save your precious cat, and the cat is now dead".

Truth of the matter - the cat was dead before the people even left town.

Moral of the story - all of life can be explained by stories about a cat.  Right now, I feel like a 'cat on a hot tin roof'.  Don't think that needs further explanation.

[ Parent ]
Okay...time out!
Go back and RE-READ the article --
"potential for a superbug combination...",
"possibility of a dangerous combination...",
"could create a superbug pandemic with the potential to wipe out...",
"so if there is really a reassortment..."

There's nothing in the article that says it has happened. There's nothing in the article that says it IS happening now...
All of it is speculation by ONE expert who is only saying these things are possible...

DoD raised it's pandemic alert for service people overseas who are heading into the Holiday season worldwide and will most likely be mingling with people who are carrying the H1N1 virus. Bringing the virus back to base could be a catastrophe if hundreds of soldiers suddenly come down with the flu...even if only mild cases.

Take a deep breath...

The Chinese Do Not Make "Off The Cuff" Remarks.
With the greatest respect BroncoBill, The Chinese Government, and its employees, do not make "Off The Cuff" remarks like this.

Not wishing to get into a detailed analysis of the Chinese character or its Government, truth is regarded as a dangerous and inflammable material in that country, and it's use is carefully rationed in the interest of harmony. Speculation is likewise rationed as it also has the capability to disturb. There is no overriding requirement to tell someone an unpleasant truth just for the sake of telling the truth.

So my question is "Why Now?" There must be a need to make this speculation right now, knowing it would be picked up and placed under a microscope by the likes of us. The obvious answer, to me at least, is that such mutation has already been detected, and that a "break it to them gently" information plan has been started.

The question I think we will want to ask is "will existing H1N1 vaccines have efficacy were such a mutated virus appear?"

only thing I wanna know
The only thing I really wanna know is something no one here can tell me...

1) could the current H1N1 vax possibly have a chance against the H1N1 x H5N1 cross (nope, no way to know cuz we can not predict which epitopes will be present in any meaningful manner).

2) Is there an H5N1 vax already? The same question as 1 but from the H5N1 angle

3) If its sufficiently different to sidestep vax specificity - how will the world decide, with the needed swiftness, to stop making the H1N1 vax once they have the novel H1N1/H5N1 2.0 vax ready to produce.

Just thinking about this in a proforma way is intimidating. I am sure they have run these war games.  I hope they are ready.

I concur with BB
Many things 'could' happen, on this planet.  This is not the first time these possibilities are raised, nor will it be the last.  The fact that someone raised it means, well, that someone raised it, again.   That's it.  Is there anything in that article that we don't already know?  I didn't find any...

China Daily News

"Mutations were almost inevitable in influenza viruses," Shu said.

Shu said the mutation detected recently was isolated and the cases were not interrelated to each other.

"This kind of mutant virus has been found in patients with slight and heavy symptoms as well as those who have recovered. The virus has not widely spread so far," said Yu Hongjie, an expert from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The WHO concluded that the mutation' s affection to the public health had not been clear but it reminded health workers to strengthen the monitoring of the flu virus, Yu added.

"As far as we know, the vaccines are still effective in the prevention of this kind of mutant virus." said Chen Weiyun, spokeswoman for the WHO Representative Office in China.

re: China
I do not trust a thing China tells the world about disease matters. I well remember SARS and H5N1 and 'blue ear' and other outbreaks both human and livestock where there was first total denial, then a few hints of something or other happening, then 'all is well', then yes something happened, and we now have it under control, and then yes we have a problem, it's what the rest of the world's scientists speculated it was, but we've now got the army in charge and then more coverups and death reductions and hidden cases til things settled down again.
So when someone over there dares to contradict the OFFICIAL Party line, they too disappear or are imprisoned and discredited. Only those with Party approval would dare to mention such a possibility as a new pandemic virus emerging there (as they would never want to be blamed for being a point of origin)...so I'll dare to say that unless they PROVE to the World that they are cooperatively providing realtime information and bringing along UN WHO and CDC officials to have a look for themselves, it will be business as usual.

On the other hand, I've long contemplated the possibility that H5N1 will evolve into a H2H disease with high pathogenicity. There are so so many opportunities now with H5N1 ENDEMIC to Egypt, Indonesia, and China that H5N1 will coinfect swine and poultry and humans along with H1N1 and other viruses, and pick up sufficient changes to really start the rounds. Additionally there is both legal and illegal shipping of swine and pork products from China to many other regions, as has been the reality for years. When and if that happens I hope they don't blame it on Mexico again.

Dr. Niman is asking China to release the sequences
D225G Ukraine Norway Link and China Spread
Recombinomics Commentary 14:15
November 25, 2009

The same mutation has been found in both fatal and mild cases elsewhere, including in Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine, and the United States, said the WHO.

WHO's spokeswoman in Beijing, Vivian Tan, said the agency is aware of three such cases in China that occurred in June and July that were similar to the cases being investigated in Norway. Tan said WHO had no information on the cases mentioned in the Xinhua report Wednesday.
There is no evidence the mutated swine flu virus is circulating widely in the world, Tan said, but since it has been linked to deaths in Norway and elsewhere, investigators are focusing on whether this mutation could be a marker for more severe disease.

The above comments are associated with a report of eight D225G isolates with in China.  Genbank has three of the sequences, as noted earlier.  The increase in examples to eight is not surprising since D225G was in four of four fatal cases in Ukraine and reports from Norway cited detection in three isolates, 2 fatal and 1 severe case who had recovered.

However, 25 HA sequences deposited at Genbank had an HA sequence that contained D225G, A/Norway/2924/2009,  but also had the wild type sequence, raising concerns that D225G was circulating as a mixture that was most easily detected in lung samples, because the D225G was more than a "marker".  It is a polymorphisms that was found in 1918 and 1919 samples which were well characterized for receptor binding properties, which indicated the change conferred increased binding to gal 2,3 receptors which are present in lung.

Concerns that this receptor binding domain change was widely circulating were increased because an HA marker on the Norway isolate with D225G was found on additional isolates in Norway, and worldwide (see list here).  This marker was also in the HA sequences from the fatal cases in Ukraine.  Full sequences from one of the Norway isolates, A/Norway/3364-2/2009, were deposited, and a marker on the NA sequence matched isolates with the HA marker, linking this broader set of isolate from Norway with the Ukraine sequences, which also had the NA marker, as did multiple other isolates (see list here).

These associations link Ukraine to Norway, but the D225G polymorphism has jumped onto multiple genetic backgrounds, which are widespread, increasing concerns the D225G is circulating undetected because it is concentrated in lung tissues and is poorly represented in nasopharyngeal swabs.

Release of full sequences from China, as well as Norway, would be useful.

South Korea Unlikely to Buy Problematic H1N1 Vaccine from GSK
http://www.tradingmarkets.com/...

SEOUL, Nov 25, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -South Korea will likely not order a vaccine against the Influenza A (H1N1) virus made by GlaxoSmithKline Plc. (GSK) after the product seemed to have caused a series of severe allergic reactions
in Canada, health authorities said Wednesday.

Distribution of the "Aprepanrix" vaccine made by the Britain-based pharmaceutical company has been halted in Canada after it was linked to six cases of anaphylactic shock, which leads to breathing problems and a sudden drop in blood pressure.

The South Korean government earlier made a purchase agreement with GSK to secure 3 million doses of the vaccine within the year,..

Japan to send experts to Canada over flu vaccine reactions
http://health.asiaone.com/Heal...

OKYO - Japan plans to soon send a team of health experts to Canada to investigate allergic reactions to swine flu vaccinations from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a government official said Wednesday.

Japan has ordered doses of GSK-made vaccinations for 37 million people, a shipment due for delivery in the country in December, as Japan has a limited supply of its domestically-made vaccine.

"We plan to dispatch our experts to Canada in early December, but we are considering sending them as quickly as possible," said an official of the health and welfare ministry.

The World Health Organization said Tuesday that an unusual number of severe allergic reactions to swine flu vaccinations have been recorded in Canada, where a batch of the vaccine from GSK has been recalled.

US: CDC says that the rates of 'invasive pneumonia' tripled in Oct vs 5 yr averages in Denver metro
November 25, 2009 - Rates of serious pneumococcal infections associated with H1N1 influenza are increasing around the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today.
Anne Schuchat, MD, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, led a press briefing.

According to Dr. Schuchat, in the Denver metropolitan area, 1 of 10 active bacterial core surveillance sites where investigation into this issue is ongoing, the number of cases of invasive pneumococcal disease has tripled compared with the 5-year average for the month of October.

"Most of that increase has been in adults under the age of 60," Dr. Schuchat noted. "The findings in Denver probably reflect findings that are occurring in other parts of the country where the surveillance hasn't been as intensive," she added.
The findings highlight the fact that "pandemics put us at risk for not just flu problems but also bacterial pneumonia problems," and they also point to the need for prevention efforts, Dr. Schuchat said.

Biological H1N1 Vaccines: Too Little, Too Late
Lethality of H1N1 Virus Drops to "Non-Epidemic Resting Levels" in Current Cycle - Virus' Infectivity Remains Increased; New Faster-Developed Synthetic Replikin Vaccines Found Effective, FluForecast(R) Gives Advance Warning of Strain-Specific Outbreaks and Cessation

BOSTON, Nov. 25 PRNewswire -- Biotech firm Replikins Ltd., which has analyzed the H1N1 virus' genomic data from the 1918 pandemic through the prediction, outbreak, and progress of the current H1N1 pandemic, today issued its latest biochemical analysis of the virus. The new data shows that the lethality of the H1N1 ("Swine Flu") virus has dropped from its peak of 3.7 (s.d. 4.5) during the virus's current outbreak in the spring of 2009 to resting non-epidemic levels this week of 2.0 (s.d. 0.1). The H1N1 virus' infectivity count, however, remains increased.

The new data shows changes in the Replikin Count*, a measure of a virus's ability to rapidly replicate. A decrease in Replikin Count has signaled the end of each of the three influenza pandemics of the last century (H1N1, H2N2, and H3N2), the end of the SARS outbreak in 2003, and the end of the H5N1 (Avian Flu) outbreak in humans in 2008 (refs).

The company issued an interim advance report of this decrease in lethality on September 30, 2009 (refs). That report has now been confirmed by the current additional Replikins data and by the recent CDC epidemiological reports of declining total hospitalizations and deaths, and declining pediatric deaths from H1N1 (refs). In April 2008, Replikins issued a warning of an impending H1N1 influenza epidemic when the virus' Replikin Count reached levels not seen since the last H1N1 pandemic in 1918.

Without advance warning, the current biological methods of vaccine production cannot possibly meet the growing needs of a human population that today exceeds 6.7 billion. The current H1N1 Pandemic demonstrates the inherent limitations of biological vaccines, which simply do not permit the timely delivery of vaccine in sufficient quantities before a "hit-and-run" emergent viral disease like H1N1 has come and gone.

Latvia: Baltic states swine flu death toll rises
Riga - Fears grew about the spread of the A/H1N1 flu virus, known commonly as swine flu, in the Baltics Wednesday, after Latvian health officials confirmed two more deaths as a result of the illness. The Centre for Infectious Diseases said a 49-year-old man from Riga and a 60-year-old woman from the eastern town of Jekabpils had become the second and third fatalities in the country.

Latvia was the first of the Baltic states to suffer a swine flu fatality on October 9 when a 50-year-old woman died from complications related to the virus.

On Monday, neighbouring Lithuania recorded its second swine flu death and Estonia experienced its first.

The number of swine flu cases in the Baltic states has risen sharply in recent weeks, with long queues for anti-viral medication forming at some pharmacies and many schools closed.

Lithuania has been particularly hard hit with more than 400 people currently hospitalized and more than half of the country's 60 municipalities declaring that the flu has reached epidemic levels...

Saudi Arabia: Swine flu fears for hajj pilgrims

By Charlene Gubash, NBC News Producer

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia - The road to Mecca for Islam's annual hajj is littered with needles this year. Before you even leave your country of origin you have to get vaccinations for meningitis, seasonal flu, yellow fever, and for the lucky, the H1N1 vaccine.
Our trip started in Cairo, where Egyptian authorities are keen to prevent their residents from catching the H1N1 virus during the yearly pilgrimage and bringing it back home.

They insisted on a complete physical, including blood tests, chest x-rays and electrocardiograms to make sure we were healthy enough to travel before we were even allowed to get the H1N1 vaccine, which Egypt requires of all hajj pilgrims. China, Turkey, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and others also are mandating the H1N1 vaccine.

Why are they so afraid? For at least five days, more than three million pilgrims from 160 countries are assembling in one place at one time, worshipping, eating and sleeping next to each other. For Muslims, it is the spiritual voyage of a lifetime; but for the H1N1 virus, it is the opportunity of a lifetime to hitch a ride on hosts that will deploy to the four corners of the earth.

Russia: Circassians in Karachaevo-Cherkessia Plan Mass Protest
Circassians in the Republic of Karachaevo-Cherkessia have called for a national demonstration to protest against the denial of their civil, political and ethnic rights. Two demonstrations are set to take place on November 26 -the first in the town of Habez, located 18 miles to the south of Cherkessk, the capital city of KCHR, then in Lenin square in Cherkessk, in front of the republican administrational building (the local newspaper "Cherkessk," November 17).

The initiative group for the protest sent an application for a license to hold the demonstration to the Cherkessk mayor's office on November 4. The application was denied on the basis of a governmental decree issued on November 12 announcing a national emergency in the republic because of the H1N1 virus pandemic and banning any public gatherings for an indefinite period (www.09biz.ru, November 19).

The head of the Circassian youth movement, Timur Jujuev, told Kavkazsky Uzel that the government's decree on the swine flu emergency was issued not because of the virus pandemic but to prevent Circassians from mass public protests.

Arming the Immune System against H1N1
Researchers are working to treat pandemic flu by recruiting a patient's own immune cells.

By Lauren Gravitz
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Viruses multiply incredibly quickly once they've infected their victim--so fast that antiviral medications such as Tamiflu are only effective if given during the first few days of an infection. After that, the viral load is just too high for a single drug to fight off. But researchers are working on a treatment for the H1N1 virus (or swine flu) that uses a different approach. Rather than disabling the virus with a drug, they're creating a vaccine that can activate and steer a patient's own immune cells to attack the invader.

Scientists at the Vienna, VA-based Cel-Sci have created a screening platform, called LEAPS (Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System) that identifies epitopes--small pieces of a virus that can be used to elicit very specific immune reactions. The DNA segments that make up these epitopes are so short--just eight to 30 amino acids long--that they can be re-created in the lab. Then the Cel-Sci researchers take those segments and attach them to another small molecule--an immune-cell-binding ligand that guides the complex straight to the immune cells in charge of initiating and directing an immune reaction.

The ligand-bound epitope is guided directly to immature dendritic cells, so named for tiny tentacles that reach out in every direction from the main cell body. Dendritic cells are the immune system's conductors, responsible for initiating and guiding the fight against invaders like the influenza virus. Immature dendritic cells are prompted to mature by the presence of these invaders; the mature dendritic cells then activate T cells, which in turn stimulate very specific immunity against the virus.

Drug-resistant swine flu probed-WHO says other cases found in Norway
The World Health Organization is looking into reports in Britain of the likely spread of a drug-resistant strain of swine flu, the United Nations agency said Tuesday.

Britain's Health Protection Agency said five cases have been confirmed in Wales of patients infected with H1N1 resistant to oseltamivir -- the generic name of Roche and Gilead Sciences Inc.'s antiviral drug Tamiflu.

"We have seen the reports, we need to look into them," said WHO spokesman Thomas Abraham.

WHO has previously reported cases of the pandemic virus being resistant to oseltamivir but says these are rare.

Abraham, asked whether it would be the first instance of person-to-person transmission of a Tamiflu-resistant form, replied: "As far as I know there have been possibilities but it never has been conclusively shown." H1N1, a mixture of swine, bird and human viruses, has killed at least 6,770 people globally, according to WHO.

WHO said it was still probing whether a mutation in the H1N1 influenza strain, detected most recently in Norway last week, is causing the severest symptoms among those infected.

Decoding the turkey's genetic gobbledygook-Va. Tech research could lead to 'happier' birds, bigger breasts or legs
By Daniel de Vise
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 26, 2009

If ever there were a candidate for genetic engineering, surely it is the pale, flavor-challenged bird that will adorn millions of American dinner tables Thursday as a matter of Thanksgiving ritual.

And here is a reason to give thanks: The day of the super-turkey might be nigh.

Virginia Tech scientists announced this week that they have secured funding to complete the genetic map of Meleagris gallopavo, the domesticated turkey. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a two-year, $908,000 grant to Tech and the University of Minnesota to finish decoding the turkey, one of a few species to be mapped at the genetic level. Turkeys are the fourth-leading source of meat on dinner tables. Cows, chickens and pigs have been genetically catalogued.

The possibilities for genetic manipulation seem endless. At a minimum, the turkey might be genetically engineered to convey a bit more flavor. And turkeys aren't the most comely of birds. Could they be bred for better looks as well as taste? How about a turkey that arrives pre-stuffed or packed with extra endorphins to pacify a dysfunctional family? Or thighs thick enough for the NFL?

SNIP>

Turkeys are more akin to chickens, genetically speaking, than humans, although there is speculation that turkeys and humans share a common ancestor perhaps 200 million years distant. Turkey DNA contains 40 pairs of chromosomes, compared with 23 pairs in the human code. Human DNA contains about 3 billion chemical building blocks, called base pairs, and the turkey genome holds about 1 billion.

About nine-tenths of the turkey genome has been mapped...

FL: New mom in coma w/ H1N1, newborn survived 5 days
WELLINGTON - Claudia Hernandez doesn't know her baby is dead.

Her family says the 22-year-old paralegal has been at Wellington Regional Medical Center, in a coma, since last Wednesday, when she was diagnosed with H1N1 flu.
That same day, a relative said today, doctors delivered Jayden Amaury Dinvil, a month premature.

He lasted five days, dying Sunday. The family plans to bury him Friday.

And now it is both mourning Jayden and sitting vigil on Claudia.

"It's been difficult," Jadelyne Baptiste said. "They gave her a 10 percent chance of living."

Baptiste's brother, Renald Dinvil, a car salesman, lives with Claudia in Boynton Beach.

Jayden was their first child, she said.

Claudia began having a fever on Sunday and sought medical help, but each time she was told she was just tired, Baptiste said.

Then, "her fingers and toes started going black. We knew that meant she wasn't getting any oxygen."

Baptiste did not say if doctors had declared the child a direct victim of H1N1 flu, but said the family was told he died because he was delivered too early.

"They (doctors) said the baby wasn't going to make it because it wasn't getting oxygen to its brain and had a hole in its lungs," Jadelyne Baptiste said.

Palm Beach County health department spokesman Tim O'Connor said Wellington has reported H1N1 cases in the last week or two, as has nearly every hospital in the county. He could not confirm any individual cases.

He said the agency has not been notified of any deaths similar to what Hernandez' family has described and the count, through this afternoon, for the country remains at 11.

O'Connor did say that when Aubrey Opdyke, diagnosed with H1N1 in July, lost her infant, Parker Christine, also at Wellington Regional, the death was attributed to premature delivery rather than directly to the H1N1 flu.

Wellington Regional CEO Kevin DiLallo said today he could not comment on any individual patient

The H1N1 virus, known as swine flu, has claimed its first life in Chester County, according to county health officials.

A female county resident died in a Philadelphia hospital last week due to complications with the H1N1 virus, said county Public Information Officer Rebecca Brain. The victim had multiple underlying health issues, Brain said, but no other information including her name, age and address could be provided because of hospital-patient privacy laws.

The state Department of Health Web site reports there have been 49 H1N1 deaths across the state, but this is the first in Chester County. The county has had 340 confirmed cases of the swine flu, and there have been 10,499 confirmed cases statewide. (continued ...)
