Swine flu: did Egypt overreact?
Rubbish collectors, farmers, and even school children mostly affected by epidemic never materialised.

CAIRO - While a review is underway of how the World Health Organization (WHO) and national authorities handled last year's outbreak of the H1N1 virus, also referred to as swine flu, medical experts in Egypt have criticized their government for overreacting to the pandemic, provoking unjustified fear and wasting millions of dollars-worth of much-needed public funds.

"Egypt is probably the only country in the world that acted in such an insane way towards the virus," Saed Aun, a former preventive medicine advisor to the Egyptian health ministry, told IRIN. "The Egyptian government applied the wrong policies in dealing with the crisis."

When H1N1 was first detected in a university dormitory in April 2009, the Egyptian Cabinet in May decided to cull all the nation's more than 350,000 pigs obstensibly to avert the spread of the virus, although the link between H1N1 and pigs had not been officially established.

Apart from the enormous loss to pig farmers, the culling led to an accumulation of rubbish on the streets of the capital as pigs had been eating much of it previously.

In Cairo, the livelihoods of unofficial rubbish collectors - known as 'Zabalin' to Egyptians - and pig farmers were very much intertwined as the former collected organic waste from the capital's streets and sold it to farmers to feed their pigs. The cull hit the livelihoods of 70,000 former pig farmers and 'Zaballin' and their families in the Cairo area, according to local NGO Association for the Protection of the Environment.

"The waste was a good source of profit for the rubbish collectors," said Israel Ayad, a pig farmer and unofficial spokesman for the rubbish collectors. "Why should they collect rubbish after the pigs are gone?"

In reference to the health hazards posed by the piles of rotting waste in the capital, Chairman of the Doctors' Association Hamdy al-Sayed described the situation as a "national scandal".

The government later said the cull was not related to H1N1 but was simply a general health measure.

Schools hit hardest

Experts say Egypt's schools were the biggest losers in the government's handling of the pandemic. In addition to the intermittent closures of some schools, the ministries of health and education ordered all schools to halve the sizes of their classrooms, which led to many children being able to attend only three days a week.

"The state of confusion surrounding the appearance of the virus harmed the educational process greatly," Nadia Youssef, an educational specialist at Cairo University, said. "The problem was that the virus appeared during the first months of the academic year. Some schools were closed down while parts of the curricula were removed, affecting the educational record of the students badly."

Health officials in Egypt are divided over whether they can expect any more waves of H1N1 infections.

The country's 55 hospitals and health centres capable of dealing with H1N1 cases say they are ready to receive any new patients and have large stocks of vaccines.

Fathi Shabana, head of Imbaba Fever Hospital, said his hospital had 60,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine in preparation for winter, which is considered to begin in November.

However, Mustafa Orkhan, head of the Swine Flu Centre, a local NGO which gives tips on H1N1, said he did not expect any more outbreaks of the virus in Egypt.

"Egypt is safe as far as this virus is concerned," he said.

Controversial vaccinations

The issue of H1N1 vaccinations is at the heart of public and expert debate on the pandemic and how it has been handled.

The government spent 30 million Egyptian pounds (US$5.4 million) to buy 1.9 million doses of the vaccine, having failed to secure the 5 million doses it was seeking to purchase.

Later, a plan to inoculate 1.2 million schoolchildren went awry as hundreds of thousands of parents refused to send their children to schools to get the vaccine after rumours spread that the vaccines could cause physical deformities.

Now, the health ministry still has some 500,000 doses of the vaccine in its stocks. Some of these will be used to inoculate around 70,000 people travelling to Saudi Arabia in November to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage, but the inoculation is optional.

The remaining vaccines will expire in May 2011.

"These vaccines will of course be thrown out after they expire," Aun said. "This is yet one more indication of the failure of the government to deal with the crisis wisely."

Health officials said 16,356 Egyptians had contracted the H1N1 virus to date and 280 people had died - most of whom had other health problems.

Globally, more
than 15,000 people died as a result of the virus since April 2009 but the WHO had predicted two to four million deaths. (IRIN)

Egypt Announces 110th Bird Flu Case
Saturday, July 24, 2010
hat tip Michael Coston-Avian Flu Diary

Egypt hasn't reported a human infection with the H5N1 virus since last April (see Egypt Reports 109th Bird Flu Case), but today KUNA - the Kuwait News Agency - is reporting on a 20-year old woman in critical condition from bird flu in Cairo.

Health    7/24/2010 9:49:00 PM

CAIRO, July 24 (KUNA) -- Egypt on Saturday announced the 110th discovered bird flu case in the country, saying the patient's condition is "critical".

"The 20-year-old female was transferred to Sadr al-Abbasiya Hospital in Cairo, as she was suffering from high temperature and breathing difficulties," Health Ministry Spokesman Dr. Abdulrahman Shahin told reporters.

The patient has been medicated with Tamiflu and is still under supervision, he noted.

Egypt had taken preventive measures to contain the pandemic since its outbreak in 2006, including restraints on mobilizing live birds between provinces, as well as banning the slaughtering of birds outside allocated locations among other precautions.

More info on Egyptian woman hospitalized with H5N1 infection
http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidr...

Jul 26, 2010 (CIDRAP News) - Egyptian officials have confirmed H5N1  avian influenza in a 20-year-old woman who is hospitalized in critical condition in Cairo, according to MENA, the country's news agency.

Health ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin said the woman, from Qalyubia governorate, about 30 miles north of Cairo, was admitted to the hospital Jul 21 with fever and breathing difficulties, Daily News Egypt reported yesterday, citing MENA. He said the woman is undergoing treatment with oseltamivir (Tamilfu) and is under careful monitoring.

Reports have not said if the woman had contact with sick or infected birds. (snip)

Earlier this month the Egyptian government instituted a ban on the sale of all live poultry to help prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus, which is endemic in the country, according to the Daily News Egypt report. The only exception is licensed slaughterhouses that employ veterinarians to assess the health of the birds and supervise slaughtering, cleaning, and sales of the birds.

The pace of H5N1 detections in Egyptian poultry has slowed since the end of May, with only 11 reports since Jun 1, according to Strengthening Avian Influenza Detection and Response (SAIDR), a project, funded by the US Agency for International Development with assistance from Johns Hopkins University. (snip)

In developments elsewhere, over the last 2 months the H5N1 virus has struck poultry in six villages in Indonesia's Bengkulu province, located on the southwest Sumatra island coast, Antara news agency reported yesterday. A provincial health official said at least 75 chickens had died, with the virus confirmed in some of the remaining poultry. (continued)

111th human H5N1 case confirmed
The Ministry of Health reported the 111th case of avian flu in Egypt, a two-year-old girl in Cairo, at the same time as a vaccine is being developed locally. Thirty-five people have died from the virus so far in Egypt.

The girl started developing symptoms on Aug. 2 and is currently receiving treatment in a public hospital.

But officials maintain that there is no reason to worry. The head of the General Authority for Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohamed Mostafa El Garhy, told state-run Al-Ahram newspaper that the situation is completely under control and there is no threat from the H5N1 virus at the moment due to the high temperatures.
In addition, the Authority is currently taking all the necessary precautions to prepare for winter when the virus is most active. It has arranged awareness programs to people involved in the poultry industry, whether at farms or individuals at home in rural areas.

At the same time, a local vaccine against bird flu was developed at the Agriculture Research Center. The vaccine was approved by all laboratory researchers and scientists in the veterinary field, the head of the National Institute for Animal Health Research at the center, Mona Mehraz, told official news portal egynews.net.

WHO has confirmed this case in its update 36 on H5N1 in Egypt.

Health Ministry announces Egypt's 122nd case of bird flu
Wed, 25/08/2010 - 22:09

The Health Ministry on Wednesday announced the appearance of another case of the H5N1 virus, bringing the total number of documented cases in Egypt to 122 since the virus--also known as avian or bird flu--first emerged in 2006.

The patient, a female resident of  the Qalyubiya Governorate, is currently receiving treatment at a Cairo hospital.

According to a ministry statement, her symptoms include high fever and breathing difficulties. She contracted the illness after coming into contact with poultry suspected of having been infected with the virus, the statement noted, adding that she remained in critical condition despite having been treated with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu on arrival to the hospital.

The last time an Egyptian succumbed to the H5N1 virus was in April. That case brought the total number of bird flu fatalities in Egypt to 34.

According to the World Health Organization, Egypt has reported the third largest number of avian flu cases worldwide.

The majority of H5N1 cases in Egypt have come as the result of close contact with infected domestic poultry. Approximately five million Egyptian families depend on domestically-raised poultry as an important source of both food and income.

Since July, more than 16,000 people have been infected with the avian flu worldwide, resulting in the death of 265 people.

As far as the H5N1 virus is concerned, hundreds of alive fowl traders have been fined, and those convicted of second offences imprisoned for up to six months. Egypt has pressed ahead with centralising the slaughter of fowl. By the end of 2011 the capacity of slaughter houses, many built in cooperation with the private sector, will have increased by 30 per cent, says Mehrez.

snip

Between November 2009 until January 2010, the number of H1N1 infections increased from 2,226 to 8,064. The figures fell in February, when 284 cases were reported, and have been falling ever since. During March, April and May, the number of reported cases ranged from 56 to 93. According to El-Sayed, swine flu-related deaths were highest in January, with 122 fatalities, and in December with 115 fatalities. In February there were 12 deaths and during March, April and May three. Seventy-nine per cent of those who succumbed had chronic, underlying illnesses.

snip

The Health Ministry's official spokesman, Abdel-Rahman Shahin, stresses that since the ministry's last official statement on swine flu on 1 June there has been no evidence of a possible new wave. There have been no mutations in the virus or any cases of resistance to Tamiflu. The highest number of swine flu cases reported was 2,650 cases during the last week of December 2009 after which the Health Ministry decided to stop issuing daily reports on the pandemic.

Doctors warn of new swine flu strain 'deadlier than last'
Tue, 26/10/2010

Some medical experts have warned that a new strain of the H1N1 virus, otherwise known as 'swine flu,' could reach Egypt after appearing in a number of other countries.

According to immunology professor Dr. Abdel Hadi Mosbah, the virus mutated in Singapore and has reappeared in New Zealand and Australia. Egypt, he said, would require a new vaccine if the virus began appearing in other countries.

Mosbah added that the new variant was spreading fast and was "more deadly" than the previous one.

Tropical medicine professor Dr. Reda al-Wakeel advised people to take the usual precautions, such as avoiding crowds, staying away from infected persons, exercising, and eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Some observers, however, greeted the warnings with skepticism. They point out that last year's strain of swine flu--despite apocalyptic forecasts by the World Health Organization--turned out to be no more fatal than seasonal influenza.

Two Egyptian women die from swine flu, bird flu
By   Safaa Abdoun /Daily News Egypt December 5, 2010, 6:33 pm

CAIRO: Two Egyptian women passed away this weekend in the Delta from swine flu and bird flu, the Ministry of Health said.

The swine flu victim, a 30-year-old pharmacist from the city of Damanhour in the Beheira governorate, passed away on Thursday. She went to the hospital on Nov. 17 after developing severe flu symptoms including fatigue, sore throat, coughing, and pain in her bones and muscles.

Abdel Rahman Shahin, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, announced on Saturday that a 30-year-old women in the governorate of Gharbia passed away from bird flu. Hers is the 37th death from bird flu in Egypt since the disease first appeared in 2006. It is also the tenth bird flu fatality to occur in Egypt in 2010.

Shahin also warned that the number of deaths related to swine flu may rise in the coming months, as the Ministry of Health expects there will be an outbreak of the H1N1 virus in the near future.

Last March the Central Operation Room of Crisis and Disaster Management at the Information and Decision Support Center for the Cabinet of Ministers announced that the number of people to contract swine flu in Egypt has nearly decreased in half.

The highest number of swine flu cases in Egypt was reported during the last week of December 2009 and the beginning of January 2010.

The swine flu virus started appearing again with 75 reported cases during late October and November; despite this, Shahin stated that it is nothing the public should fear.

In a press statement on Nov. 23, Shahin cited Director General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan's latest statement regarding swine flu: "As we enter the post-pandemic period, this does not mean that the H1N1 virus has gone away. Based on experience with past pandemics, we expect the H1N1 virus to take on the behavior of a seasonal influenza virus and to continue to circulate for some years to come. In the post-pandemic period, localized outbreaks of different magnitude may show significant levels of H1N1 transmission."

Therefore, the Ministry of Health advises all citizens to take all the precautionary measures against the virus in the upcoming period, including washing hands, proper ventilation at workplace and home, covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and avoiding crowded places.

The Deputy Minister of Health for precautionary affairs, Nasr El Sayed, said that they are monitoring swine flu in more than 450 hospitals around the country.

More Egyptian poor fall victim to flu season
Salma Shukrallah , Wednesday 22 Dec 2010

Several deaths caused by the so called bird flu, avian flu, and swine flu, or H1N1, have been reported in the past month.

Despite the alarming mutation of the two viruses to become transferable to humans proving less fatal than expected, Egypt's economy and health continue to suffer.

According to the Egyptian ministry of health, there have been 114 cases of bird flu, mostly in rural areas north of Cairo. Although the ministry did not give an official estimate of the number of H1N1 cases, at least 8 have been reported  yesterday in Gharbeia Governorate, in Egypt's Nile Delta, in addition to the tens of cases that have been reported during the past month.

snip

Egypt's health minister announced last week that the so called swine flu has become a seasonal virus and is no longer alarming to the country.

Avian flu, on the other hand, while not labelled by the WHO as a highly alarming virus, is threatening a huge sector of Egypt's population, especially those in rural areas.

Egypt produces avian flu vaccine
By Safaa Abdoun /Daily News Egypt
December 23, 2010, 2:32 am

CAIRO: The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Cairo University has been able to produce the first Egyptian vaccine against avian flu, in collaboration with the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute, a subordinate of the Chinese Academy for Agricultural Sciences.

"After thorough testing to find the cause of the spread of avian influenza locally during the past three years, and testing the genetics of the strains using the latest state-of-the-art technology available at the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute, we have been able to come up with this vaccine and tested it on poultry," explained Dr. Ahmed El Sounoussy, viruses science professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Cairo University.

He explained that they have tested it on chickens to determine how their immune system responds to it, as well as the level of future protection - or immunization - the vaccine provides against the virus.

"The preliminary results of tests conducted in China have found that the vaccine is 100 percent effective," El Sounoussy said. "However, when tested on Egyptian poultry under the local conditions in Egypt, it has been proven that it protects [93 percent of] the flock against the avian influenza."

The Veterinary Services Authority has already launched the vaccine in the pharmaceutical market, as the virus is particularly active during the winter season. The final results of the vaccine's efficacy are expected to be determined approximately 90 days from the date that the chickens were first vaccinated.

Last month, official Ministry of Health Spokesperson Abdel Rahman Shahin announced the death of a 30-year-old female in the Gharbeya governorate due to bird flu. This is the 37th death related to bird flu in Egypt since the disease first appeared in 2006; it is also the tenth bird flu-related fatality in 2010.

In related news, officials recently revealed in their latest press statement that 218 cases of swine flu - which the authorities commonly now refer to as "emerging flu" - were found in Egypt between Dec. 12 and Dec. 18 of this year.

Ever since the H1N1 "swine flu" virus started appearing last October, 533 cases have been found, 30 of which resulted in death.

During the same time last year, when swine flu was widely considered a serious pandemic, there were 10,599 cases in Egypt and 134 related fatalities.

Six different governorates infected with swine flu
Fri, 24/12/2010 - 11:01

Three people have died in three different governorates from complications associated with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as "swine flu," while 19 others in six different governorates were said to have been infected with the virus.

According to the Health Ministry, a child in Ismailia has also been diagnosed with bird flu.

Dakahlia's swine flu committee reported the death of 56-year-old Mohamed Suleiman in association with the H1N1 virus. The Health Ministry also reported the death from swine flu of 23-year-old Idara al-Gohary from Kafr el-Sheikh on Thursday.

In Beheira, 48-year-old Fathiya Abdel Maqsoud from Tanta also reportedly succumbed to the disease.

Officials from the Dakahlia Health Directorate, meanwhile, said that Health Minister Hatem al-Gebali would be meeting with representatives of the governorates' crisis-prevention departments to discuss ways of combating the viruses in the coming period.

According to ministry officials, the latest case in Ismailia brings the total number of cases of bird flu in Egypt to 115.

Breakthrough: Sino-Egyptian vaccine to stamp out avian flu

Reem Leila, Friday 24 Dec 2010

The new vaccine is effective for one year, though poultry must receive an additional dose six months after getting the first shot. The Veterinary Services Authority (VSA) has already launched the vaccine on the market, as the virus is particularly active during the winter season. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation is providing the vaccine for free to owners of large poultry farms. Individual breeders in rural areas can vaccinate their poultry at VSA-affiliated units also for free.

The vaccine's efficacy can be determined approximately 90 days from the date that chickens are first vaccinated.

According to Mona Mehrez, head of the poultry labs, at the Ministry of Agriculture, the vaccine is safe. "Consumers when eating poultry will not feel any difference, whether in the taste or the texture of the meat," Mehrez told Ahram Online.

AVIAN INFLUENZA, HUMAN (68): EGYPT, 38TH DEATH
A new human death from avian influenza was reported by the Egyptian Ministry of Health, bringing to 38 the number of fatalities from avian influenza A/(H5N1) virus infection since the beginning of the outbreak in Egypt in 2006.

The victim was an 11-year-old girl resident in Luxor Governorate, which is located 660 km south of Cairo. Abderrahmane Chahine, a Ministry of Health spokesman, reported that the girl had developed acute pneumonia. The same source added that a total of 115 people, distributed throughout the country, had contracted avian A/(H5N1) virus infection during 2010, 11 of whom had died.

Egypt, with 38 fatal human cases identified since March 2006, remains the country most affected by avian influenza outside of Asia. The poultry industry in Egypt, which employs a million people directly or indirectly, has suffered serious economic loses, estimated at 3 million dollars [USD?]. Avian influenza is a contagious disease caused by a virus that normally infects birds, and less commonly pigs. Avian influenza A/(H5N1) virus is highly species-specific but has, on rare occasions, infected humans.

* Comment is free Egypt's ailing regime now cares only for its own survival

Muslim-Coptic tension is just one aspect of a wider turmoil that will worsen until real democracy takes hold

When it comes to services and the wellbeing of Egyptians, the government has failed to act effectively. It has failed to handle our rubbish, leaving it to pile up on the streets. Egypt was hit by daily power cuts last summer, sparking many protests against the government. Egypt currently holds the record for the highest rate of bird flu and Hepatitis C infections in the world. On top of that, Egypt has witnessed a multitude of railway accidents, sinking ships and road accidents that claim the lives of 12,000 people every year.

In short, these are all signs Egypt is turning into a failed state. The 2009 Failed States Index ranked in the "warning" category - 43rd from the bottom (out of 177 countries). Sectarian tension and violence is one indicator of state failure, where the security system and political leadership distance themselves from the people's affairs and in many cases work against their interests.

Egyptians reluctant to accept a health law proposal
Wednesday, 05 January 2011

snip

CAIRO (Arab Media House)
A new draft law in Egypt which stipulates issuance of IDs for animals, faces hard acceptance in the country, and many see it as a costly measure.

The proposed IDs for animals will include all necessary information such as names and contacts of their owners, and description of the places where they were kept.

snip

The North African country had the highest number of bird flu related deaths in 2010. About 10 of the 25 bird related flu cases have died. Also, according to the World Health Organization, 50 percent of the bird flu deaths were in Egypt.

snip

Egypt is very late in applying the animal ID policy," he told AlArabiya.net. "It is very important to issue an ID for each animal in order to know its history, the vaccines it got, and how many times it got infected with certain diseases."

Attar added that IDs help in the daily medical checkups of the animals, and can stave off any possible diseases by measuring changes in weight or milk production in case of mammals.

The Egyptian Gazette Online
Saturday, January 8, 2011 03:59:00 PM

CAIRO - Health authorities in the Delta Governorate of Gharbiya have announced on    two new deaths from swine flu, known as A/H1N1, taking to 15 the number of fatalities recorded in two weeks .

The two cases included a man and a woman identified as Wafaa Abdul Latif and Ahmed Maher el-Mughazi, who were in their early thirties, the authorities said, adding that the deaths were reported by Samanoud Chest Hospital on Friday night.

The patients, who have  been diagnosed with the flu, are in quarantine and undergoing tests, it added.

The H1N1 swine flu virus has infected 1,172 people in Egypt and killed 56 since October 8, a Ministry of Health official said.

The virus has infected 16,373 people, of whom 281 died, since it was first reported in Egypt in June 2009, said the official, who asked not to be named.

H1N1 flu broke out in 2009 and quickly spread across the world. The World Health Organisation said about 18,450 people died from the virus, including many pregnant women and young people.

Last year Cairo took various initiatives to try to limit the spread of H1N1, including culling all pigs in the country, temporarily closing schools and stopping travellers with fever at airports.

No mutation of the avaian flu with swine flu, says health minister
Ahram Online, Monday 10 Jan 2011

Egyptian Minister of Health Hatem El-Gabaly denied the presence of any mixed mutation of avian flu with swine flu (H1N1). He did, however, warn citizens against taking the flu threat lightly.

El-Gabaly asked ministries and governors to fight the disease as part of a new bill that will also prevent bird slaughtering and stop licensing the establishment of farms in residential blocks. The bill was presented during a meeting of the People's Assembly's Health Committee today.

Moreover, he confirmed that no incidents of mutated swine flu virus have been found so far, pointing to the decrease in the number of deaths this year, which stands at 109 down from 812 last year.

El-Gabaly added that the Swine flu season in Egypt starts at the end of October and reaches its peak by the end of December. It is expected to begin its decline in January and February.

WHO confirms human H5N1 case
http://www.who.int/csr/don/201...

Avian influenza - situation in Egypt - update 41
13 January 2011 - The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 10-year-old male from Giza Governorate, developed symptoms on 5 January and was hospitalized on 8 January. He is in a stable condition.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to poultry.

The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Of the 120 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 40 have been fatal.

Swine flu recurs
13 - 19 January 2011

The incidence of swine flu infections remains within the expected range, Reem Leila reports

Experts and health officials expect cooler weather to bring an increase in incidents of swine flu. On 8 January the Ministry of Health announced the death of more patients and an additional 733 confirmed cases of infection. Of the dead -- most of them are patients suffering chronic diseases.

Ministry of Health spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shahin says that between October 2010 and January 2011 the number of cases of swine flu in Egypt reached 2,904. During the this week, 20 swine flu fatalities took place. During the current winter season of 2010-2011 there are 3,214 cases. Twelve months earlier 14,846 cases were reported during the same period. Swine flu was first detected in Egypt in June 2009.

Clinical studies and surveillance conducted by the ministry, adds Shahin, show the H1N1 virus spreading within the normal range of seasonal flu.

"Swine flu cases are expected to increase during January but by the beginning of February the number of fatalities and infections are expected to decline."

Health Ministry data reveals that 80 per cent of fatalities last year comprised patients with chronic underlying problems or else pregnant women. There are more than 450 hospitals across the country involved in surveillance to the deadly virus.

Nasr El-Sayed, deputy minister of health for preventive medicine, advises people to take the seasonal flu vaccine which now includes protection against swine flu.

"There have been no mutations in the virus or any cases of resistance to Tamiflu," says El-Sayed. This year children account for 13 per cent of the total of reported cases and the elderly just two per cent. "The majority of swine flu cases," reports El-Sayed, "are among the 17 to 35 age group."

"Until now additional precautionary measures have been judged unnecessary and will not be put in place as long as the overall situation remains at its current levels," he says.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has announced the death of the first bird flu patient of 2011. The victim is a 40-year- old male from Al-Daqahliya governorate. He was found to have contracted the virus last week. The last bird flu fatality of 2010 -- Egypt's 39th -- was a 25-year- old woman from Qena who died on 29 December. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) the number of H5N1 infections reported since the virus appeared in Egypt in February 2006 now stands at 119, with 40 cases proving fatal.

Tamiflu, says Shahin, is available for free at public hospitals. It is also widely available in pharmacies.

"Only patients suffering from the H1N1 or H5N1 virus should take Tamiflu. No one should do so as a precautionary measure," he confirmed.

Health Ministry: 26 succumb to H1N1 despite plummeting infection rates
Egypt's Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that 26 people had died from "complications associated with the H1N1 virus," commonly known as "swine flu," over the course of the past week, but added that overall infection rates were considerably lower than last year.

Most of those who died were people already suffering from chronic diseases or pregnant women, according to a ministry statement.

The statement noted that a total of 598 cases of H1N1 had been diagnosed in the period from 9 to 15 January. The statement also noted that infection rates during the current winter season had doubled within the over-40 age bracket compared to last year.

However, laboratory results cited by the ministry indicated a 73.9-percent decrease in overall swine flu infection rates and a 48.8-percent decrease in H1N1-related mortality rates during the current winter season as compared to the 2009-2010 winter season.

A man was said to have died of the H1N1 virus, or "swine flu," in the Nile Delta governorate of Beheira on Tuesday.

Mohamed Abdel Gawad, 35, was hospitalized for two days after showing symptoms of the disease.

"We also took samples from his family members in order to test them," said Health Ministry Undersecretary Hisham Atta.

Wales: 'Worst of flu is over' as rates fall sharply
Figures published by Public Health Wales today show the flu GP consultation rate stands at 51.5 per 100,000, down from 93.

Dr Meirion Evans, a regional epidemiologist at Public Health Wales, said although flu has peaked and is now declining, he expects to continue seeing cases for up to three weeks.

"We had perhaps a rather less sharp peak than we thought as consultations may have fallen off during the Christmas and New Year period," he said.

"But these figures are a sure sign that flu rates are now on the decline and that, therefore, seasonal flu is on the wane.
