H1N1 Death Toll Mounts In Chihuahua Mexico
Recombinomics Commentary

Last night, a woman of between 20 and 25 years of age died of H1N1 influenza, as there are already 5 deaths from this disease across the state.

The above translation indicates the death toll in Chihuahua is rapidly rising. All five fatalities have been young adults, and bear striking similarities with the 2009 outbreak (Snip)  The spike in severe and fatal cases at a time when seasonal flu is in decline raise concerns that the H1N1 in northern Mexico represents a variant.  The concern was increased by descriptions of cases as atypical pneumonia instead of H1N1.

The sharp rise in hospitalized and fatal cases in Venezuela, as well as additional regions of Mexico, provides additional similarities with 2009.  Media reports in Mexico suggests the Chichuahua outbreak is linked to H1N1 in the United States (Snip) Texas and New Mexico in particular.  (Snip) the CDC has not released any 2011 sequences from either state, and only one sequence for the entire 2010/2011 season has been released.

(Snip) the number of 2011 sequences from the entire United States has been limited because the last release was February 2, 2011 and was largely from December, 2010 collections. Release of recent sequences from severe and fatal cases in the United States, Mexico, and Venezuela is overdue.  The long delay in the release of US 2011 sequences raises signficant transparency issues. http://www.recombinomics.com/N...

Poultry industry at risk from bird flu in Bangladesh
Nearly 30 000 chickens have been culled and 50 000 eggs destroyed at a farm in Gazipur (Snip) after avian influenza was found.

The latest outbreak coincides with the opening of the country's annual international poultry show (Snip) comprising almost 250 stalls of exhibiters from 23 countries ranging from Germany to the United States and China. http://www.agra-net.com/portal...

March Flu Numbers Down at the Pass
http://www.ktsm.com/news/march...
EL PASO:  The Department of Public Health says that preliminary flu numbers for March aren't as high as January and February.  The health department reported 357 cases of the flu in January and 302 cases in February. That number exceeds the number of cases they reported during the H1N1 pandemic. Last year, there were 20 cases in January and 21 in February.

So far in March, they've seen 126 reported cases, ten of which were the H1N1 virus. The health department also says that H1N1 was found to be a "secondary factor" in the death of a 76-year-old man in February.

Canada: Flu cases overload CHEO emergency room
OTTAWA - A record number of children with flu and stomach viruses is clogging the emergency room at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, leading to long waits, bed shortages and cancelled surgeries. The situation is being worsened by a spike in the number of children and teens needing urgent care for depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and other mental-health crises. The unprecedented demand for the hospital's psychiatric services started last November, shortly after the suicide of 14-year-old Daron Richardson, the youngest daughter of Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson. (Snip)

Since January, ER visits to CHEO have gone up by 20 per cent, resulting in a total of 15,000 patients. Of that number, 516 suffered from mental distress (Snip) To date, the hospital has had to cancel 27 elective surgeries (Snip) CHEO's chief of staff, said hospital staff are taking extra shifts to help deal with the high patient volumes. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/h...

North Carolina flu strain less sensitive to Tamiflu
As flu season fades, state and federal health officials are examining a cluster of influenza B viruses from North Carolina that appear to show less responsiveness to the antiviral drug Tamiflu than typical flu viruses. The N.C. Division of Public Health has notified N.C. physicians about its investigation, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of viruses that appear to have undergone a genetic change that hasn't been seen in virus samples from other states.

Lab tests conducted by the CDC indicate that the altered viruses are less sensitive to Tamiflu in the laboratory, but are not completely resistant. (snip) state medical epidemiologist, assured physicians and patients that antiviral drugs remain an effective treatment for influenza. Thirty-one viruses with the genetic change were collected from 92 samples from N.C. patients from November to February. Most of the patients had typical flu symptoms and recovered after several days. One patient who had severe underlying immune problems died shortly after being diagnosed with influenza.

The CDC is testing more influenza B viruses from North Carolina and surrounding states to determine whether the same genetic change can be found in other B viruses from North Carolina or elsewhere in the country. (Snip) Because the importance of sensitivity to Tamiflu in these samples is not yet clear, health officials are advising physicians to follow existing antiviral guidelines, but to consider this new information when caring for patients who are hospitalized with severe influenza B infections.

Influenza B virus infections have accounted for almost half of all specimens that tested positive for influenza at the state laboratory since October. Continued: http://www.charlotteobserver.c...

Mexican governor says new H1N1 outbreak came from US
A new outbreak of H1N1 in northern Mexico, which left four dead in the past week, originated in the southern United States, the Chihuahua state governor said Monday. "It has been confirmed that the woman who died in Chihuahua was on a trip from the (US) state of Texas. Also, those infected in Ciudad Juarez were all linked to trips to the United States or contact with US citizens," Cesar Duarte told journalists Monday.

Duarte said that 18 deaths of people suffering from H1N1 flu had been recorded this year in the US border states of Texas and New Mexico, according to information his office received from US authorities. Continued: http://news.ph.msn.com/lifesty...

World ill-prepared for severe influenza pandemic: expert committee
GENEVA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The world is ill-prepared to respond to a severe influenza pandemic or to any similarly global, sustained, and threatening public health emergency, an independent expert-committee entrusted by World Health Organization (WHO) said at its fourth meeting here on Monday. The Review Committee, tasked to look into the experience gained in the global response to the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in 2009, issued its preliminary report at the meeting.

(Snip) the Committee said, "global preparedness can be advanced through research, strengthened health-care delivery systems, economic development in low and middle-income countries and improved health status." It recommended that international society establish an extensive global public health reserve corps consisted of experts and public health professionals, which could be deployed to support countries in need, in case of future pandemics.

Another suggestion was to create a contingency fund for public health emergencies to be held in trust at an institution such as the World Bank, in order to provide financial support during a declared public health emergency of international concern. The report also urged WHO member states to reach an agreement on sharing of viruses and access to vaccines, and encouraged them to run independent or cooperative influenza research program. Republic of Ireland: Flu death toll reaches same level as swine outbreak
The official number of people who died from flu this winter is almost on par with last year's swine flu outbreak, it emerged yesterday. There have been 26 deaths from flu recorded here since October -- just one short of the 27 who were killed by the virus when swine flu swept Ireland last year.

However, while deaths in the winter of 2009/2010 were all due to swine flu, it was slightly less of a threat during the season just gone, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. Since October, 21 of the deaths were due to swine flu, three were caused by influenza B, one as a result of both viruses, and another due to some strain of influenza A.

In 23 cases, patients had underlying medical conditions which left them vulnerable to the complications of flu, but three were previously healthy. Last year, pre-existing medical conditions were reported in 25 of the 27 deaths, including respiratory disease, heart problems, asthma and obesity.
(Snip)
During this winter, just one death was a child under five, 19 were aged 15-64 years and six were aged 65 years or older. Although no new outbreaks of flu have been reported, there are still seven people in intensive care units. http://www.independent.ie/nati...

Venezuela: Venezuela: increasing cases of H1N1
Venezuelans turn to face another vulnerability, this time they touched the H1N1 virus, the epidemic according to the Minister of Popular Power for Health reports on the official website of Ministry (H1N1) was started in the state of Merida in mid March . There is another version of the Network of Scientific and Medical Societies of Venezuela, which reports the first cases occurred in early February in Guarico state.

Whatever the correct version, the epidemic has expanded rapidly to other states. What was the beginning of an outbreak of 12 cases has reached 382 cases and 4 deaths in less than a month. As a precaution, have suspended classes in the University of the Andes, a measure taken by the governor of Merida state, Marcos Díaz Orellana. http://es.globalvoicesonline.o...

(Note: Actually, the cases have increased from 12 to 415. That's the number of confirmed cases. Number of unconfirmed cases is anyone's guess!)

Honduras: Prepared for possible outbreak of H1N1
Machine translated

In the Rivas (Hospital) is no medicine against H1N1.

Hospital officials said Mario Rivas (Hospital) prepared to cope with a possible outbreak of H1N1 flu in the country. The topic was addressed by the authorities of the medical center yesterday, after learning that in some countries like Mexico were deaths during the weekend because of an outbreak of this disease. The hospital epidemiologist Rivas, Luisamaría Pineda said that they have the physical space and with medication to treat patients that might arise.

"We need the drug Tamiflu to fight influenza, we (have) serums and antobióticos" said Dr. Pineda, who added that the hospital is stocked with enough to meet an initial outbreak.

"We monitored an average of five samples per week of cases that have characteristics of influenza, send them to the respective laboratories and thus confirm if it is H1N1 or other diseases, all patients presenting symptoms of pneumonia is monitored, " (Snip) "In our monitoring we have not recorded to date patterns that might indicate an outbreak of influenza, but we are vigilant and prepared, " concluded the epidemiologist. The alarms have been triggered by the outbreak of the H1N1 flu has already caused seven deaths in Mexico and Venezuela. http://m.laprensa.hn/35167/sho...

CIDRAP: Wild raccoons in Japan test positive for H5N1 antibodies
Researchers in Japan have found evidence of H5N1 infection in wild raccoons. They tested 1,088 blood samples from apparently healthy feral raccoons captured over three periods in western Japan and one period in eastern Japan from 2005 to 2009 for a serologic survey of H5N1 avian influenza after outbreaks in birds in 2004, 2007, and 2008. Antibodies to H5N1 were confirmed in 10 (0.9%) of the samples. (Snip) because of their opportunistic eating habits, raccoons could eat diseased or dead wild birds and also spread the disease to domestic poultry. They also conclude that raccoon-human contact raises the chance of disease spread, "posing risks to public health and increasing the possibility of the emergence of mammalian-adapted mutant viruses with pandemic potential." (Snip) reported 2 years ago by Japanese media, but this is the first peer-reviewed publication of the study. http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidr...

Venezuela: Sader: "The H1N1 vaccine does not prevent the flu "
Machine translated

The Minister for Health, Eugenia Sader said that currently have more than 1 million vaccines and are always buying more, so this week is a new item (no amount specified), the number of people vaccinated is approximately 3 million, he said. "The flu vaccine does not prevent, avoid complications that may endanger his life, " explained the deputy minister Sader and Public Health Network, Miriam Morales.

Reminded why is not indicated for the entire population, only for children 6 months to 11 months, pregnant women, aged 60 years and people with chronic diseases. Immunization is applied in the traditional vaccination centers (outpatient clinics popular, some CDI and hospitals).

On the long queues of people waiting to be vaccinated, Sader said people should not have the information and are not entitled to the vaccine, and some that should get it and "advised them last year, when the relaunching of the expanded scheme immunization, but did not attend, now we are catching up with their immunization schedule

The death toll remains, authorities said (two in Merida, one in Miranda and one in Nueva Esparta). Reported that in all confirmed cases, the trend is that 2% require hospitalization. H1N1 Cases Cause Concern in El Paso & Juarez
March 29, 2011
http://www.chron.com/disp/stor...
El Paso and Juarez health officials expressed concern on Monday about a potential H1N1 flu virus outbreak that could have played a role in three deaths on both sides of the border.
El Paso city health officials said the virus was a secondary factor in February's death of a 76-year-old El Paso man who had chronic health problems.

"We want to make sure the community realizes how serious we are taking this investigation, but we also want to make sure there is no unnecessary alarm throughout the region," said Fernando Gonzalez, epidemiologist for the city's Department of Public Health. "This recent death is not a case of a seemingly healthy individual who contracted the diseases, became ill and died as a result."
(snip)
Concerns over a new H1N1 outbreak prompted Chihuahua officials to stress that several people who contracted flu-like symptoms visited either New Mexico or Texas or were in contact with people from the U.S. side of the border.  Chihuahua state health officials confirmed Monday that H1N1 was a factor in two recent deaths and also confirmed H1N1 flu cases reported since March 24. Six other cases proved negative for the virus.  Hector Puertas Rincones, director of the Chihuahua Health District 2, said 13 suspected H1N1 flu cases were reported this month. Several Juarez police traffic officers were among those who fell ill.

H1N1 Deaths Extend To Jalisco Mexico
Recombinomics Commentary

In the Old Civil Hospital of Guadalajara killed a 53-year-old resident of Michoacán and sick with influenza A H1N1. Arturo Rangel, head of the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health Jalisco (SSJ), reported that this death is the first in the state for this cause.

The above translation describes an H1N1 death in Jalisco, which is far south of the five deaths reported in Chihuahua.  This is the first confirmed death in Jalisco this year and reflects the differences between the United States and Mexico.  In Mexico most influenza A in the 2010/2011 season was H3N2 and the cases peaked in late 2010.  Currently there was little influenza circulating prior to the recent outbreak (Snip) but has now spread throughout the country. The reported deaths lag behind infection, which are producing a high rate of severe and fatal cases (Snip)  The first confirmed H1N1 case in the US was collected March 30, 2009.  At the time previously healthy young adults were dying in Mexico due to atypical pneumonia, which was subsequently confirmed to be pandemic H1N1.

Multiple reports indicate that the outbreak in Chihuahua originated in New Mexico and Texas, where H1N1 levels are markedly higher than Mexico and are similar to H3N2 levels.  (Snip) sequence data from New Mexico and Texas has been withheld.  There are no public 2011 from either state, and only one sequence for the entire 2010/2011 season, collected November 30, 2010, has been made public.  That sequence has S188T, which is present in the dominant sub-clade in the United States and was responsible for the outbreak of severe and fatal cases in the United Kingdom at the end of 2010.

(Snip) the difficulty in sub-typing the cases in Mexico raises concerns that this sub-clade has evolved further in 2011, leading to outbreaks in Mexico and Venezuela. Release of sequences from severe and fatal cases in all three countries is overdue. http://www.recombinomics.com/N...

Mexico: Ministry of Health rule out new A-H1N1 Outbreak
MEXICO, 29 (Bloomberg) - The Ministry of Health of Mexico refused to consider a new "large outbreak"of influenza A-H1N1, and 2009, despite already five deaths in the states of Chihuahua (north) and Jalisco (West). The director of the National Center for Prevention Programs and Disease Control (Snip) explained that "it is unlikely"an epidemic as the epicenter of which was to Mexico two years ago triggered a global emergency.

In the case of Chihuahua, U.S. border, where until now seven confirmed cases of influenza A-H1N1, although there are many more suspects, "keeping the epidemiological surveillance and actions have been implemented for the control" of the disease (Snip) "You can rule out a repeat of what happened in April and May 2009 without a doubt. But surveillance is maintained while there is movement of the virus, but no alarm. We have no situation out of control and are taking necessary measures, "Lezama said.

On Monday, Jalisco state authorities reported the death of a person for the A-H1N1 virus in Guadalajara, the capital, in addition to four other registered days ago in Chihuahua. http://www.ansa.it/ansalatina/...

Two Bird Flu Suspects Found in Fifty Cities
March 29, 2011
http://www.sitinjaunews.com/ka...
Fifty Cities:  Two suspected bird flu were found in the Mungo Kanagarian LUHAK Fifty District Municipality.  The two bird flu suspect people have been referred to the Hospital Achmad Muchtar Bukittinggi and are under care.  However, the Office of Fifty Cities Health District is not willing to provide detailed data about the bird flu suspects.  Some employees of the Fifty Cities Health Office Fifty met in the local Health Department office on Tuesday (29/03/2011) and confirmed the existence of bird flu suspects in Fifty Cities, but were not willing to provide detailed data.

"You should immediately contact the Head Office only to find out more about this bird flu suspect," said one Health Department official who did not want to mention his name.

Meanwhile, the Acting Head of Health Fifty Cities, Juneidi, was not in place during between-sumbar.com at his office.   The Head who oversees infectious disease problems also was not in place.  Fifty cases of bird flu in the City seemed to be covered by the relevant Departments, both Public Health and Animal Husbandry Department.

Until Tuesday (29 / 3) no real action is heard of being performed by two such agencies to tackle bird flu in the region . In fact, bird flu is a virus that is dangerous, even if not taken seriously, it could threaten the lives of people.
