Less Protection from Pandemic Influenza With H1N1 Vaccine Observed in Patients With RA
Responses to flu vaccines in 340 RA patients in regular follow-up compared to 234 healthy patients were assessed in a Brazilian hospital-based study.

Measures of protection obtained by vaccination (seroprotection rate (SP)) after immunization was over 20% lower for RA patients compared to healthy individuals (60.1% vs. 82.9% comparatively (p<0.001)). Tests to determine levels of detectable antibodies to microorganisms in the blood serum as a result of infection and immunization with the flu virus (seroconversion rate (SC)) showed a similar pattern with 53.4% of RA patients and 76.9% of healthy controls having antibodies present respectively (p<0.001). Study Looks at How the Flu Induces Asthma in Children
(BOSTON) -- Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston say they have found a biological pathway that explains why the flu induces asthma attacks. According to the findings of a study conducted by the researchers, which was published in Nature Immunology, influenza activates a group of newly recognized immune cells called helper cells, which leads to children getting asthma attacks.

The findings are the results of studies done in a mouse model, according to a release issued by Children's Hospital Boston. Continued: http://www.wtma.com/rssItem.as...

Venezuela: Woman dies of suspected influenza infection (Zulia)
Machine translated

Luz Esther Chirinos, 24, managed to give birth to her son four days ago, but did not survive. She died yesterday at 4:00 pm at the Hospital Dr. Manuel Noriega Trigo. The doctors could not save her and she was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure with A H1N1.

The woman apparently had complications and was hospitalized. After some tests it was confirmed that the woman had influenza virus. (Snip)

Nelly Barboza, an epidemiologist at the Regional Health System, dismissed the hypothesis. (disputed the diagnosis) In Zulia not recorded new cases of influenza since 12 May. The forensic autopsy to determine cause of death.

Her family were sealed (upset) by the news. Said they (the medical staff/hospital) did not respond in time to Chirinos. (The) husband and sisters of the victim became violent and were removed from the health center. http://www.laverdad.com/detnot...
