Don't forget folks....
Peter will be here tomorrow night from 7-9.

Tonight
I'm looking forward to our chat!

Best, Peter

Hi Peter! Welcome back to Fluwiki.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
your book....
It obvious your book is doing well because the price increased by $5.00. LOL

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

pricing
That's just Amazon & B&N messing around....

[ Parent ]
Their algorhythms dance with one another

[ Parent ]
That's OK.
It was worth it!

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
So, they aren't sharing that with you, huh?
Shame on them.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Paper version pricing is a bit mysterious
At the moment, they both seem happy to charge more than they were at the start. Sorry about that!

[ Parent ]
Don't apologize.....
they think the book is worth it and so do I.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
The ebook shall remain at $2.99 in all versions!

[ Parent ]
I have a confession to make...
I like holding a book in my hand and turning the pages. I like putting them on my book shelf to keep too.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I still read paper books, too.
My home is jammed with them. But I'm proud to say that the digital version of AMERICAN FEVER offers a lot extra - something like 1,500 live links to Flublogia, movies and music on YouTube, science papers, news stories, funky stuff.

[ Parent ]
That gives me an incentive
to join the digital reading world then.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
The traditional critics are funny
hey never ever mention that the book is part of a multimedia project, or that the ebook is n any way unusual. They want it all to go away.

It has links to flu blogs you all know, with real & deep info about our favorite bug, and the story unfolds like a national Katrina

But my AMERICAN FEVER website is remarkable in itself:
http://www.americanfeverbook.com/

The blogger sells masks and gloves and goggles, so the site does this, too. (Not that I sell many, but the presence of these things is cool.)

And at one point, he starts selling the books and music and movies he mentions, so those are up for sale, too, through Amazon.

And artists from around the world contributed art, so the site has a gallery.

[ Parent ]
I think all of it is cool.
I noticed the changes to your American Fever website recently. The way you are doing all of this is so different that it really stands out, IMO.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Thank you!
The project is evolving. The website for the publishing company (ARTERIAL WITNESS) is very different, with an amazing logo. The site was created in Bali, not far from where H5N1 had just popped up.
http://arterialwitness.com/

[ Parent ]
The book is worth it!
If you haven't read it yet, I urge you to do so. Peter has gave us a very insightful look into what life could be like during an H5N1 pandemic, up close through his flu blogger. I couldn't put it down.

United we stand: Divided we fall
www.flunewsnetwork.com

[ Parent ]
Thank you! I tried to be real about it....

[ Parent ]
Funny about how critics see the character
Some think he's really nice - others think he's a total creep.

[ Parent ]
I thought he was nice
Compasionate while trying to survive at the same time.

United we stand: Divided we fall
www.flunewsnetwork.com

[ Parent ]
Thanks, I think so, too.
Someone n Amazon, who liked the hook, called him "a total jerk." It's cool, though, speaking as a creative person, to have made a character who is so present and yet seen so differently by readers. I don't fully understand it yet.

[ Parent ]
Ah, but that makes him
and the book so much more interesting to a wide variety of people. That's what it's all about..... bringing in a large audience and holding their attention.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Not a jerk at all. Fighting
for your life can bring about unplesant aspects in a person that is typically not them. It is odd how he is looked at as a jerk.

United we stand: Divided we fall
www.flunewsnetwork.com

[ Parent ]
I think it's partly his politics at the start
He likes Ayn Rand at the beginning of the novel and some people can't stomach that. I thought it interesting, especially for a guy selling protective gear at the start of a pandemic. The novel certainly isn't peddling anyone's political line, but Rand is a hotwire for people. It's fascinating to see how that plays out over time.

[ Parent ]
He also loves Gene Clark, one of the original Byrds
... as well as a lot of great music, all the way through to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He changes over time, under stress, finds more of himself.

[ Parent ]
It felt real. I fell into his world
and lived this pandemic with him. You did an excellant job pulling the reader into his world.

United we stand: Divided we fall
www.flunewsnetwork.com

[ Parent ]
Thank you!
I lived it for years, really. It's all pretty real to me. I refer to the blogger as 'he' in conversation and people find that odd. But I know him very well by now. (He sure is different from my 209-year old Irish vampire, who tours Manhattan during the summer 1988 heat wave....)

[ Parent ]
An Irish vampire... That sounds interesting! n/t

United we stand: Divided we fall
www.flunewsnetwork.com

[ Parent ]
Yes, I love that
He has lived mostly in France for a long time, but in Manhattan since the late 1930s. His most recent name is Luc, which is the name of the book....

[ Parent ]
He falls in love with a film student
... who wants him to play the lead in her Edgar Allan Poe movie because he has "a timeless quality."

[ Parent ]
I'm here. Sorry I'm late
Hi Peter, hi Miss Carol.

United we stand: Divided we fall

[ Parent ]
Hi cottontop
I was taking good care of Peter for you. LOL

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I have launched a global video contest
it's rather unusual.

Great. Tell us about it.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]

Sounds like a fun thing to do.
I will check out the link.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
If you know any young filmmakers or videomakers....
We're offering $1,000 of the best 73-second video and tghey have till July 4th to submit it.

[ Parent ]
I know someone who might be interested.
I will pass along the link to them.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Thanks, the film schools are all telling their students
You'll see some energetic new influenza acolytes!

[ Parent ]
Now, that's a good thing!

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I've been in touch with schools everywhere
So far, throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong. Soon, Europe and the rest of Asia....

[ Parent ]
That's great. That should get a lot of response
from some very talented people.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I expect so - book trailers are rather weird and need help!

[ Parent ]
I like this part because it is so true.
"Spurred by a friend who was marketing books for a big publisher, Hall realized he should seek fresh thinking via a crowdsourced book trailer. "There's a world of enterprising talent out there in film schools and tiny production companies - scouring magazines, websites, and the great DSLR blogs - itching to make an fast impact with great images."

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
A smooth way of admitting I was clueless!
I think I'm too close to the text and characters and science to boil it down to 73 seconds. I can't wait to see what fresh minds make of AMERICAN FEVER.
I have a rather funny, 3-second bit to add to the winning video. Good for election year.....

[ Parent ]
And I bet it's a secret for now. LOL

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I'm dyng to say it, but yeah, I should keep it under my hat for now

[ Parent ]
I am looking forward to the video
It sounds like it will be wonderful!

Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for courtesy. Ralph Waldo Emerson

[ Parent ]
Thanks, I hope for hundreds of videos
I hope to see videos about AMERICAN FEVER all over YouTube! The contest runs until July 4th, so there's almost a day per second for videomakers to come up with the images.

[ Parent ]
& I truly have no idea what might win
I expect to see many things I'd never have thought of.

I added a rule that they can break my rules if they make something great.

[ Parent ]
Hi mojo
I'm glad you made it tonight.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
This would be a good opportunity
to advertise this at our local libraries.

[ Parent ]
Here is Andy (Gang of Four) Gill's amazing AMERICAN FEVER Track!
I am listening to it now and I like it.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
There has never been a book trailer soundtrack like this one!
Andy and Gang of Four did the music for my movie, DELINQUENT. He is enormously talented.

[ Parent ]
I didn't know you had a movie.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Yes, I'm a filmmaker, too.
http://www.americanfeverbook.c...

Hall wrote, produced, and directed Delinquent, a feature film (with an original soundtrack from Gang Of Four). It sold on five continents and played in American movie theaters for months.

When the movie opened in LA, the Los Angeles Times said:

"Delinquent is one of those great little near-no-budget movies that every now and then seem to come out of nowhere to give hope for a truly independent American cinema. It marks a stunning feature debut for writer-director Peter Hall, who never makes a false move as he builds suspense right from the start....

"Delinquent, which boasts an effectively nerve-jangling score by Gang of Four, its first for a film, is a highly accomplished work in which its cast is never less than compelling. This is one suspense picture that gives way to a larger contemplation of the interplay of fate and emotion."

Delinquent is available on dvd at Amazon.

[ Parent ]
It takes place in upstate NY
A bit south of where Cottontop lives, near Cooperstown.

[ Parent ]
WOW! That quite a compliment and
positive review. I'm going to look for it tomorrow on Amazon.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Glad you like it!
He put an effect on the guitar that is really disturbing, as if a virus were slurping its way across the planet....

[ Parent ]
I know.... it really fits.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
We wanted a two-stage catasterophe in the music
because, of course, the Great Pandemic of 1918 did that. (And then there was that nasty third stage, but I wanted a fast, clean video.)

[ Parent ]
Here's what FILMMAKER MAGAZINE says about AMERICAN FEVER's video contest
I'm glad you are posting all these links
so that the folks who can't be here tonight will have access to them later.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
D o you see a movie coming in the future
for American Fever? I would love for that to happen.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

A lot of people say they do see a movie as they read it
I tend to write that way because I'm a filmmaker, but I did not expect that my novel about a blogger would strike people this way. I'm extremely pleased about this.
The blogging is like a public diary and it's thrilling for me to hear that people find it so vivid.

[ Parent ]
Still, I'd prefer to hand it to someone to shape as a film
I am working on two novels and another movie and shaping AMERICAN FEVER as a screenplay is just too much on top of that. Again, a fresh eye would be cool.

[ Parent ]
I will be back in a few minutes.
Don't go away! LOL

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
What's you movie in progress about?
I heard through the grapevine that one of your novels in progress is about vampires. You are a very busy man so it is nice that you take time to visit us here at Fluwiki.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
The next 2 novels are indeed vampre novels, but very real and I think, deep

[ Parent ]
The movie I am writing ...
is taken from a little-noticed piece of one of the greatest classic novels. I can say that it's intense, intimate, and must be surgically assembled as I update this excellent & sexy story.

[ Parent ]
That's quite a change from American fever....
a man of many interest, huh?

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I have about 10 narratives I'd lke to deliver.....

[ Parent ]
Then you should go for it.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
"Vivid" is the perfect word and description.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Thank you, Carol!
I always worried that the science would turn people off, but as we all know, the science of influenza - for all that mankind does not know about it - is AMAZING!

[ Parent ]
Well said.
The flu virus is fascinating to me.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I was staggered at how litlte we understand flu
halfway through writing AF, I discovered Hope-Simpson and then I found that the top scientists quietly admit that we dn't know how we transmit flu to one another. I almost tore my hair out.

[ Parent ]
LOL
The microbe world is so unique and mysterious that I don't think we will ever completely understand it, no matter how much science progresses. It's for sure that we will never completely conquer it!

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Sometimes I think it's better that way!
I love nature. In the introduction to AMERICAN FEVER, my blogger looks back on the pandemic and compares influenza to Continental Drift. I wonder if he's right....

[ Parent ]
I don't think I want to know the answer to that one. LOL
But it is quite possibly true with the way evolution works.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I suspect we are
The mimivirus I cite in that passage I linked to is related to all the recognized branches of life and it's bigger than a lot of bacteria.

But I won't ever know the truth.

When they talk about universal solutions to flu, I kind of doubt that will ever happen.

[ Parent ]
I don't think they ever will.
Flu viruses are always evolving and mutating. We can't possibly keep up with that, not to mention the many different strains. I just don't see how that is possible.

United we stand: Divided we fall
www.flunewsnetwork.com

[ Parent ]
Me too.
"When they talk about universal solutions to flu, I kind of doubt that will ever happen." There is a lot of research going on to find the one factor that would make a flu vaccine successful against all flu viruses but I won't believe it possible until it has been well proven. Viruses have survived since the beginning of time by being tricky little devils that can change to meet any challange they encounter.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
I thoroughly agree!
It seems we know a lot about viruses until you turn the knowledge base over and realize how limited it is. We're like the Europeans back in 140, wondering what's out there....

[ Parent ]
And....
it would scare us to death if we ever found out what ALL is out there.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
It would scare most people, I guess
But whatever is there has been there all along--apart from the toxins ewe invent....

[ Parent ]
Apologizing for Typos here!
I talk/type too fast....

I can spell but my fingers can't. LOL
Typos are ignored (I hope) because I make them all the time and everyone is kind enough not to mention it.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
The permanance of my typos here is scary, though!
Vampire errors.

[ Parent ]
When do you expect your new novels to be finished and published?

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

Luc wll come out in 2013, for sure.

[ Parent ]
Keep us posted on it, please.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Funny, when I interviewed Laurie Garrett about the Contagion virus....
She started talking about the rust virus that's killing wheat in Africa. And I could not restrain myself from telling her that in my vampire novel, LUC, he's ranting at the start about monoculturism and how people are all going to die from some virus that kills the wheat.
LUC is s very GREEN vampire novel. Imagine how you'd feel about earth if you'd lived for 209 years....

[ Parent ]
I expect to deliver CHANCE, the sequel to LUC, in 2014

[ Parent ]
As I said earlier, you are a busy man!

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
And I want to complete the (as-yet-untitled) movie by 2014

[ Parent ]
Might we be hearing about
American Fever: the movie anytime soon? That would be cool.

[ Parent ]
I will cross my fingers.....

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. --Unknown

[ Parent ]
Well, I have to keep buildng AMERICAN FEVER.
It's a long-term project. A love letter to influenza and a critique of how society functions in a crisis....

[ Parent ]
A love letter to influenza... That's good!
There were times in the book that were disturbing for me, the way you did protray how society could function in that kind of crisis. Situations I couldn't have thought of but yet a very realistic situation.

United we stand: Divided we fall

[ Parent ]
Thanks, I avoided some lurid things
I feel that people get used to deprivation over time. I wanted to capture that. So it's a long series of steps that intensify just as the characters and readers have gotten accustomed to the previous step.

The grit was more interesting to me than Armageddon.

[ Parent ]
I would love to see that happen.
I have a large collection of disaster/pandemic movies and none are as realistic as American Fever.

Peter
it has been wonderful chatting with you again and I hope to do it again in the future. I have to run because a friend of mine has dropped by to bring me some plants for my yard. Please come back and visit with us again. BTW, how do I get my copy of American Fever autographed by it's author? LOL

Thank you, Carol!
his was a great pleasure. The autograph thing is tough! (and my handwriting is wretched, but that's a separate issue...)

[ Parent ]
Thank you Peter for visiting with us.
It's been a pleasure. I hope you will visit us again. I wish American Fever much sucess and truely hope the movie will happen. And good luck with the contest. We will be watching for the winner.

I enjoyed coming back to chat after 6 months. Stay well and please keep asking great questions of nature and society!
