CIDRAP: CDC reports no new variant H3N2 cases
No new variant H3N2 influenza infections were reported last week, keeping the national total at 306, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today (Snip). Most cases occurred after prolonged swine exposure, and though some instances of likely human-to-human spread have been reported, no sustained transmission has been seen.

Markers of seasonal flu activity were at levels normal for this time year. Deaths from pneumonia and flu were slightly above the seasonal baseline but below the epidemic threshold, and no pediatric flu deaths were reported, keeping the total at 34 for the 2011-2012 season. On Oct 12 the CDC will resume posting its more extended weekly flu reports (Snip). http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidr...

US: HHS awards $26 million for developing flu antiviral
CIDRAP: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded NexBio, Inc, of San Diego a 17-month, $26.5 million contract to develop its antiviral drug Fludase, which "could work against all known flu viruses, including virus strains that are resistant to currently licensed antiviral medications," (Snip)

(Snip) Fludase is designed to block influenza viruses from attaching to human cells, thereby preventing infection, HHS said. "The development of new influenza antiviral drugs with novel mechanisms of action is a renewed priority for HHS as a way to address emerging resistance to present drugs, to provide better treatment, and to increase the treatment options for doctors (Snip). http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidr...

Mexico took all possible Prevention Methods to Curb Swine Flu
Though there can be differences in cultural values and practices that prevail in the countries, it has been revealed that Mexico was at the top to adopt all the strategies to prevent swine flu. Britain ranked at bottom of the list.

The revelation has been made in the Lancet and the study was taken out by a group of researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and other institutions. Without doubt, it can be said that it is one of the largest studies taken out with regard to swine flu.

In order to reach at the above given conclusion, the study researchers carried out telephonic conversations in 2010, which involved 900 people. The UK, US, Mexico, Japan and Mexico were the countries from where participants were randomly selected.

(Snip)

However, there are many factors, which have led them to be in such position. Mexico was the place, where swine flu originated, so that can be the reason for the country to adopt all the guidelines. Meanwhile, Britain was least affected by the flu, so that could be the reason for their casual approach. http://topnews.ae/content/2132...

India: Two more succumb to swine flu (Maharashtra)
PUNE: Two more persons, including a pregnant woman, died of swine flu in the city, taking the city's H1N1 death toll to 19 since April this year. The condition of four more people with H1N1, including an 11-month-old baby is critical. They have been put on ventilator support.

"The 22-year-old pregnant woman, a resident of Nashik, succumbed to H1N1 at Sahyadri hospital, Deccan at 8.45 pm on Friday. The 58-year-old man, a resident of Karve Road died of H1N1 at Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital at 4.30 pm on October 6," (Snip).

The 58-year-old man had developed symptoms from September 5. However, he didn't consult any doctor till September 29. His condition worsened following which he got himself admitted at Sanjeevan hospital, which in turn later referred him to Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital. He had been on ventilator support since October 1.

The 22-year-old woman with eight month pregnancy developed symptoms from September 25. (Snip) she did not consult any doctor till September 27. On September 28, she approached a hospital in Nashik, which later referred her to Pune on September 29. She got herself admitted at Sahyadri hospital, Deccan, at 10 am on September 29. She was critical and had been on ventilator support since then. (Snip).

Meanwhile, four more people tested positive for H1N1 on Saturday. (Snip). http://timesofindia.indiatimes...

(Note: Hmmm, it seems to me there have been more deaths from H1N1 swine flu in Pune than 19.)

Four in Kovai test positive for swine flu (Tamil Nadu)
The case of four patients, two of them pregnant women, testing positive for swine flu, has triggered panic among the people of the city. They have been admitted to the isolation ward of the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).

(Snip) Sivananda colony resident Mallika, 38, a pregnant woman, had been suffering from fever for the last one week and was admitted to a private hospital in the city. As treatment did not yield any result, she was advised (Snip) to be tested for H1N1 flu virus. (Snip) she was moved to the isolation ward of CMCH.

(Snip) Baby, 24, from Karur district, in her trimester, tested positive for swine flu and was shifted to CMCH from a private hospital. "Pregnant women are more susceptible to H1N1 virus (Snip).

Authorities said there was no need for panic as efforts were being taken to ensure that the virus does not spread. There are enough vaccines in case of any exigency, they said. http://www.deccanchronicle.com...

Saudi flight boy in fever scare
Mary Ann Benitez

Monday, October 08, 2012

A four-year-old boy who came down with severe respiratory syndrome after arriving from Saudi Arabia is being tested for a novel coronavirus that has infected two people in the Middle East.

The Centre for Health Protection said last night it received a report from Ruttonjee Hospital yesterday. The boy arrived from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia with his father last Wednesday.

He went to Ruttonjee's accident and emergency department yesterday with fever, a cough and vomiting, and was transferred to Queen Mary Hospital for isolation, where his condition is stable.

Hong Kong has been on alert since the World Health Organization said the novel coronavirus - which belongs to the same family as the coronavirus that spawned the 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - killed a 60-year-old Saudi man in June.
