(good topic for discussion - promoted by DemFromCT)
The Chinese word for crisis is often stated to be composed of two characters, danger + opportunity. Whether this is true or not, influenza can be thought of as equaling both danger and opportunity for businesses.
Businesses need to plan for and mitigate against many possible dangers to their businesses from influenza viruses.
But there are also opportunities for business to serve and assist their communities (including other businesses) by insuring that necessary supplies and services are delivered, by protecting individuals at high risk of dying from influenza, by decreasing both the number and intensity of influenza exposures for everyone else, and by assisting in vaccination (when available).
It is my hope that this forum can be a place for businesses to interact with each other, with the community, and with influenza experts in the development and testing of solutions which will benefit both businesses (through profit) and communities (though decreased disease and death.)

For those who missed the webinar this past Friday, the entire video is linked and archived on line.
The following is a message from the webinar moderator:
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for your participation in last week's seminal Pandemic Information Sharing & Community Resilience Workshop hosted at the National Library of Medicine.
On June 26, 2009, major steps were taken towards building a coalition of willing participants internal and external to government to better our nation's planning and response efforts in support of the upcoming 2009 flu season.
For those of you who were unable to attend the workshop, the full proceedings can be viewed via webinar at:
http://workshop.mphise.org
We will be posting additional materials, including archives of the breakout sessions and related PowerPoint slides on a collaboratory in the near future. Details will be forthcoming.
Additionally, we will keep you apprised of several meetings leading up to the September 1st 2009 mid-term initiative review of the 120 day mission, which starts today, July 1 2009.
We look forward to working with you to mitigate the impact of the second wave of SO-H1N1 this fall, and will be in touch soon to begin an active engagement across all our focus groups and communities.
Dr. Michael McDonald

School closure has been an important part of the non-pharmaceutical interventions to use in a pandemic. The guidelines called for variation in when to close schools, and the recommendations or suggestions were keyed to the severity of the pandemic strain.
However, the recommendations for closure only varied by duration: in a severe pandemic, 12 weeks school closure is recommended. For a moderate pandemic, 4 weeks of school closure is suggested.
These options are "all or nothing". And a problem is that closing schools involves a BIG decrease in their ability to provide the services to the community, but there is no way to make the loss of those services proportional to the severity of the disease. Schools are either "open" or "closed".
Critics of school closure, or those who are reluctant to implement them, bring up concerns about child care and the provision of school lunches to poor children, in addition of course to the social and academic services schools provide. These are real concerns and the longer schools are closed, the more significant they become as issues.
I feel that there will be (is) resistance to closing schools because it is perceived as being very disruptive. We need some other alternatives, ones that allow parents and schools more flexibility.
As schools plan their pandemic response now, for the fall in the US, they may wish to consider alternatives to full scale closure, so that they may keep schools open with flexibility for students and teachers. Here are some ideas and options in how they might be able to provide flexible schooling on a temporary basis.

Welcome, new posters! Lurkers are always welcome to register and join in the discussions.
Note: the wiki proper will be down for some maintenance issues. Go Daddy will redirect to a bland page. We are aware and working to rectify the situation, which may take some time. This site will not be affected.
