Reaction to Katerina

A news report from New Orleans this week gives some reaction to Katerina from residents.
RICHARD-FL :: Reaction to Katerina
Most have changed their priorities for when a future storm moves into their area.

Their number one item:

They are buying weapons for self=defense.
"Never will I go through that type of hell again with out my new S&W .38 cal pistol ..."

Maybe they know something we need to know more about.  What happened on those streets for the 10 days when there was no law enforcement available?

I did some research and cannot find much  information about law enforcement activities other then rescue operations being done in New Orleans during the 10 days after Katerina.

Does any one have a complete picture of what happened on the streets?

This has been discussed earlier in other posts but may be useful to new members - it is a first person account of evacuation from New Orleans immediately prior to the hurricane and the resulting law and order problems.  The author describes the occurrence of many dangers that Dr. Dave alludes to in his excellent paper describing 6 months of preps.

In the past this did not result in much discussion; I don't think many people want to talk about this but after seeing what the UN is doing for their own people it may be worth a look.

Katrina-Wikipedia
Hi,

Wiki pedia has one view. I'm looking for a news story of how weapons where seized and not returned.

Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia....

[snip]"A federal judge has held New Orleans' mayor and police chief in contempt of court because a city lawyer repeatedly ignored deadlines for answering questions from two gun-rights groups that succeeded in stopping police from seizing guns from law-abiding citizens after Hurricane Katrina. "

If people can not prepare for a pandemic, how can they protect themselvs?

Contempt of Court
Well maybe some good will come of this after all.

If a local political feels they can suspend the U.S. Constitution any time they want.  This may be their answer.  I hope they put them away for a good long time.  It will be a strong message to ANY ONE who feels they have the right to take weapons away from their owners just because there is a disaster in progress!!!!!

I thought that the article was a heads up for future disaster survivors be it storms or pandemic.  Security must be the number 1 goal. This from the people who know, survivors of Katerina.

On a positive note
Hi,

During Katrina one IT tech support group stayed on line with a web cam and diary. Yes they layed in both provisions and fire arms.

Becuase they where more down town and not in worst area things where quiet and police checked on them. Fortunatly they where able to stay. Yes there where some ex-military folk in the group that stayed.

New Orleans has some flaws IMO. They where getting help from the outside - something I am not counting on.

For the initial outbreak - I assume China - help will be sent in to contain the outbreak, learn/test treatment options. After that it may hit everyone. By the time it reaches the other side of the world there will be no one to come and help.

Kobie.

Dr. Jason Irvine interview

Dr. Irvine was there and discusses the law and order breakdown.

To calm the wife buy cases of chocolate, to calm the husband buy cases of booze, and to calm the children...... heck the booze and chocolate should work.

Reaction to Katrina
The New Orleans Police Department has a long history of viewing its citizens as the enemy. The corruption in that department ran so deep, citizens would routinely decide against the police in trials.  This caused the department to distrust its public even more.  When the cohesiveness of the New Orleans Police Department fell apart, weakening the force, it was only logical that the Chief would attempt to disarm their number one enemy, the citizens.  It might be remembered that a similar attempt by King George was the catalyst that gave birth to this nation.

Combing through stuff
Rich ... found some things that might be useful on this topic:

From:  http://www.post-gaze...
NEW ORLEANS -- Dozens of looters ripped open the steel gates on clothing and jewelry stores in New Orleans, some packing plastic garbage cans with loot to float down the street.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store!"

Looters at a Wal-Mart brazenly loaded up shopping carts with items including microwaves, coolers and knife sets.

Others walked out of a sporting goods store on Canal Street with armfuls of shoes and football jerseys.

Officials said that looting wasn't the primary concern, acknowledging some residents simply were searching for food.

"We found people are taking food because people are hungry," said New Orleans Police Superintendent Eddie Compass. "We'll deal with the looting afterward. Human life is our top priority."

http://interdictor.l... is an interesting blog.  Some political but not too bad from the entries I read.  Goes back to the storms to present time.

Thanks for the Updates
I thought it was very interesting that citizens from that very forward thinking city still want a gun for protection after Katerina and the after effects.

I believe this disaster was a bigger eye opener to people then 911 was.  It effected more people, longer time frame, and over a larger area of 7 states.

This is what people remember about 911.  A movie was made, the mayor of NYC is now running for president and...the Congress has forgotten its promises made on the steps of its building the night of 911/912, where they said that whey would back the president is this War no matter what.  In the same building 5 + years later this last week they have tried to stop the war, pull out. and come home!
