Translate Citizen's Guide

by: lugon

Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 05:58:08 AM EDT

ACM's comment reminds me we can translate the Citizen's Guide just like we have started with Dr Woodson's Good Home Treatment booklet.  The Guide already has a "creative commons" license, so it should be straight forward to start it off at http://www.traduwiki...  This diary will report our advances on this matter.  With your help! :-)

Update: Please tell many others and let's start translating!
lugon :: Translate Citizen's Guide
"To do" list (to be updated as we move on):
1. [X]* convert to plain text
1.a. [X] convert titles to !!

2. [X] submit to traduwiki
3. [ ] tell others about it
4. [ ] start translating ... and cheer each other up until it's finished!
5. [ ] bug squashing (review the translation to make sure it's good quality and consistent)
6. [ ] re-compile (put all text in one big chunk, I guess we'd need traduwikians' help for that)
7. [ ] re-PDFize (images and format)
8. [ ] upload to wiki proper
9. [ ] update links in wiki proper
10. [ ] tell people about it
11. [ ] distribute as widely as posible!

* Steps 1-3 will be done once for all languages.  Steps 4-11 are to be done for each language.

the rtf version should help
http://www.newfluwik...

it needs some tweaking to bring it up to version 1.3 in the bibliography.

and we could cooperatively use a page on fluwikie.com, just to format the text before uploading it to traduwiki
with help, we might start it off over this weekend, no?

baby steps
Just "seeded the page" here: http://www.fluwikie.... with the text "Making room to copy and pre-format the text from the Citizen?s Guide - prior to submitting it to traduwiki.org".

copied "raw" text onto wikipage
so that's two baby steps

now i/we need to reformat it slightly so that we'll then be able to submit it to traduwiki.org - reformatting it will be useful even if we don't use traduwiki (we could split the text up in manageable chunks like we did with Dr Woodson's manual)

ok, baby steps!  http://www.fluwikie....

another babystep!

Guideline: Including a summary to the document will give a background to future translators and help them better seize its general meaning.

Guideline: Only documents in plain text could be accepted right now. Copying and pasting it will be fine. To format titles, just prefix the line with a double exclamation mark (!!).

So there's not much we need to do!  Just "!!" the text, do I read correctly?

ok, i've written to traduwiki.org's owner for advice - we'll see

not there yet: i uploaded the text to traduwiki and managed to break traduwiki
so the text has been taken down and there'll be a fix in http://www.traduwiki...

Maybe too much format in the text, or whatever ...

Anyway, this is just to let all those interested folks know we're still at it.  Bumping into brickwalls is our business, and we love it!

Those here who are eager to lend a hand can start making contacts with your foreign language teacher friends (and their networks), and suggest, hey, what about some useful "homework" for your students (two sentences at a time, so less-advanced students can start with the easier ones)?  ;-)

Just link to this very thread.

Translate Citizen's Guide, please! And Tell Many Others!
http://traduwiki.org...

Let's tell everyone who might speak or be learning to speak profficiently one of the many languages in the menu, so that we may get this going as soon as posible!

On the right column there's a feature to invite people, or we can just say "traduwiki.org" to our networks.

If people see action there will be more action, so please make the appropriate noises in as many places as posible!

Thanks!
