as I understand fluwikie originally was mainly
a wiki which was created and edited and the forum
was just a platform to discuss details of this process. However over the time the forum grew
much faster than the wiki and now the wiki
is pretty much outdated and the forum runs
with new software and is mainly contrated upon.

I found some very good birdflu pages at wikipedia
now, which made me wonder whether wikipedia isn't the better fluwiki meanwhile ?

Can we integrate/crosslink the fluwiki
into wikipedia or/and copy the wikipedia
bird flu related stuff over here to fluwiki ?

we can integrate and crosslink
technically and because the license is the same

and it would be a good idea to:

- have a link from fluwiki to all wikipedia pages (which means looking at one page and then at the others, collecting links and adding them to one wikipage in fluwiki)
- link from all those wikipedia pages to fluwiki

The effort of suggesting ideas is separate from the effort of implementing them or at least giving it a start.  ;-)

If you want help with setting up the first item in the above list, just yell!

You arm yourself to the teeth just in case.  You don't leave the gun near the baby's hand.

and no, wikipedia is not the better fluwiki, because
wikipedia doesn't accept speculation or suggestions (which "we" do because it's helpful)

and also because wikipedia requires registration (which fluwiki doesn't)

(that's how i see it anyway)

registration
so, could we copy the wikipedia-flu-pages to
fluwiki and then allow editing them without registration ?

"so, could we copy the wikipedia-flu-pages"
IMHO, I don't think that would be a very good idea. Wiki-pedia is one site, and FluWiki is another. I'm not so sure that copying another website's pages into your own is anything better than plagiarism, even if, afterwards, you plan to edit them.  That's why Wikipedia has a registration process...to assure that the information they present is as accurate as possible.
The same goes for FW...but we use a "peer-review" process on the wiki where we all ask for verification and proof, rather than registration.

plagiarism
if wikipedia is better, then plagiarism is useful.
Doesn't make sense to stick with fluwiki
just for historical reasons.
And it's pretty clear that wikipedia is growing faster
than fluwiki, so fluwiki won't be able to compete
in future. But that's no problem since fluwiki is not
commercial, fluwiki had had it's merits in the past years
even if it's outdated now and surpassed by better sites.

It should be possible to grasp all flu-related wikipedia
pages semi-automatically and present them here
for more powerful and concentrated search than
at wikipedia.
It's also useful to have them in one big file
for offline search, which is faster, more powerfull,
can be adapted to special tasks and works without
internet connection.

exploring ideas
I don't think it's about competition with wikipedia, as I tend to think more in "ecosystems" way: there's room for different kinds of vegetation in any given forest.

They have more muscle generally (more users, more pages, more broadband) but if you go specific, I would say FW has more about flu than WP has.  You say WP is growing faster - I don't know if it's growing faster in flu related content - is it?  Then we'd do well in watching it and linking to it, yes.

In any case, it's also about "type of content".  You can't have CanadaSue's pages there.  You can't have "hey, this is a summary I'll be presenting to my local folks" page.  Our front page would be lost in the noise.

I'm also intrigued by the "better" part.  Why and what for is WP better regarding pandemic preparedness?

Let's keep exploring the other ideas a bit, too, as there's a lot in your short exploration.

You mention off-line search.  I don't have the link right now, but there's a wikipedia initiative to have selections of the wikipedia copied into a CD or DVD for off-line access.  So maybe we could have a list of pages we'd like to see in such a CD ... it's all about creating and updating useful index pages, given that the content pages is already there.

copying means forking, i.e. both copies grow differently
which is considered a waste of developing time unless the fork (the copy that grows differently) has a specific reason to exist.

(Just as an example, there are versions of software that are forked because the developers need the software to work in specific machines or whatever.)

I don't think there are so many flu wikiwriters in the world, though I certainly wish there were more of us! :-)

Seriously, maybe we might join with wikipedia writers.  Is there a way to contact them somehow?
