Two Handouts Not Working
I wanted to inform you that there are two handouts listed that will not load.  They are:  "Water - Getting Started" and "Gloves -, Puting On & Taking Off."

TriFold Brochure prints great.
SusanC,

Trifold worked great. Still room top and bottom for more.

I wish I had more to add. So far no one has created a good pandemic website for kids.

Kobie

can you explain
Still room top and bottom for more.

what you mean?  thanks!

Brocure top,
SusanC,

Hi. I printed your brocure "Are you pandmeic ready."

It worked fine. I like the lay out.

Printing the brochure out landscape there is some room top and bottom.

I do not have any suggestions as to what to add.

Kobie

what size paper did you use?
It is written by legal size paper, which is 8.5" x 14".  If you print it in letter size, 8.5" x 11" the page will be shrunken down.

Sometimes your pdf software converts it back to your default paper size of letter size.  You have to go to check.  Go to file > page setup, and make sure it is set to legal size.

FOR legal size paper, duh! n/t

I've just up-loaded a version that I checked
it should be set to legal size.  But as I said, sometimes the pdf software reverts it back to your default size, so please go and check before printing!

Blood drive
SusanC,
Hi. Quick note. I'm volunteering at blood drive today and hope to pass out your brochure. I will pass it out as much as possible.
It might go ovoer better if RedCross.org was listed with fluwiki and pandemicflu.gov.
 Redcross does have some infomation.
http://www.redcross.org/news/d...

There is nothing on my loclal chapters website but that may change. Last year all I got was questioning looks. I hope to make more of an impression this time.

Kobie

thank you, Kobie ;-)
The Red Cross is a great organization; hope your blood drive goes well.  Keep us posted, please!

Blood drive results.
Hi,

Having nice weather we had lots of doners and the typical long line. The double red blood cell donation went well and we had to deffer some for a regular donation.

Key points - no problem putting out the pandemic information from the Red Cross. There was no grief or problem with Ready mom Trifold brouchure.

Several people saw the information, some read it and a couple took it. I was doing registration so my time to talk was limited.

The Red Cross representative remebered the pandemic flu stuff from last year and was not put off by the topic. I hope the material will be taken back to the office.

I printed out a couple of color versions of the material as eye catchers, the hand outs where two sided B&W xerox copies. The web pages used where The facts and Things you can do. This is to inform and empower.

 Notes for next time:
  1) have some material for the waiting line
  2) Have some material for the canteen where people can sit and get somthing to drink
  3) Have a thank you card for donating blood with the pandemic information on it.
  4) Use handouts that reference the Red Cross. Good will and jestures are always welcome.
  5) The blood drive is primary, pandemic handouts are secondary.
  6) Invite people to look over the material. They are more likely to pick it up.
  7) Mutual support. It is where you can help the Red Cross do something good or something better.

Regards,
Kobie

Blood donations beg a question...
If, after a major pandemic, the Red Cross is short of blood, would they be willing to accept donations from those who may survive contracting the virus?
In this day and age, they don't accept from HIV-positive people, diabetics, acknowledged drug users, etc.

I realize that if a person contracts H5N1 and survives, they then may have some immunity to it, but the way regulations are set up, would they be allowed to donate through the Red Cross?

[ Parent ]
Blood donations
While I don't know the answer - I don't believe it would be an issue because unlike HIV, Hepatitis, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, and other some diseases it doesn't reside in the system once you have contracted it.  You are not a carrier or potential carrier...you have antibodies but that is different.

[ Parent ]
shouldn't be a problem
As long as there has been sufficient time lapse and the person is well on the day of donation

a) People who survive and recover do not carry virus in the blood, only antibodies.  They may (rarely) carry virus in their respiratory or other secretions, but not in the blood.

b) In a pandemic, the virus is everywhere anyway.  Most people would have been exposed or are far more likely  to be exposed by the respiratory route.

c) I should think it would be beneficial for anyone with reduced immunity to receive blood from a survivor.

HIV, hepatitis, and CJD are different cos a) transmission can occur via blood and b) the person can look well on the day of donation.

Donation during pandemic
Bronco Bill,

Different blood products have different shelf lives ranging from five to 21 days.

Also most places do not have a month or so of blood on hand.

If 90% of the phlebotomists (sp?) blood takers are pressed into service at hospitals and such who will draw blood. I got a crayon but that does not cout.

Blood donation during a pandemic bothers me.

Kobie, how about printing that RC page and handing that out with the RMA brochure. I think you are right and it would be nice to have BOTH pages, showing that RC also has info regarding panflu. -k

Where is the RC page
ReadyMom,

Hi. Where is the RC page?

I did not get your post before going over to the blood drive. I was being cautious and treading lightly.

There will be another blood drive sometime in June so do post your ideas, thoughts or concerns.

RE: Red Cross link
Kobie - I just clicked on the link you provided above. There is a very good flier that the RedCross has, that I use for my local displays "Home Care for Pandemic Flu'. You may want to have that one available.

Go here: http://www.redcross.org/news/d...

and ...

There is also a fact guide: Family Preparedness Fact Sheet from the RC.

Better electrolyte drink?
ReadyMom,
 Hi - thank you.

It is a better page. Their elecltrolyte drink includes baking soda. Any idea why?

Sodium is lost through the skin, but so is potassium.

No, Kobie, I don't know. Greg? Susan? -k

baking soda
is sodium bicarbonate.  This can help correct acidosis that often accompanies dehydration

I kept trying to access the site, but no dice.

"The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it."  Flannery O'Connor

sorry, we took that link off
until the site is ready, it was misleading to have it lead to any other site.

We're working on the site asap as we speak.  We had a mid-stage change of software for reasons beyond our control.  It was better to make the change than to have bigger problems down the road that would have required us to change software anyway.  It was one of those things.  ;-(  Your patience is much appreciated.

In the meantime, we'll continue to use the FW forum to host our materials.

Thanks!

This is a great website full of resources, thank you for your efforts.
Here is a related site that I found, issued by the 'Board of County Commissioners' of Nez Perce County, Idaho.

http://www.getpandemicready.org/

What I found most interesting about this site, besides the information and resources, is that they're recommending that individual households prepare for three months rather than the two weeks we hear from some government sources brave enough to suggest any preparation at all.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

yes it's a great site ;-)

up to 12 weeks for those living overseas in countries that may have supply problems.  According to pandemicflu.gov http://www.pandemicflu.gov/pla...

"Typo" in Downloads
Great job with Ready Moms downloads.  These is a minor "typo" in the Alt Cooking Tabletop Sign in 2nd line from the bottom, which reads: "Matches, Mathces, Matches". Correct spelling in the center "Mathces" to read "Matches."  Thanks for all of your excellent work!

Ready Moms Toolkit- Real World Preparations for Families

This site provides a great resource for families preparing for a Pandemic. It includes Posters, Kits, and Advice for families. It also includes a discussion board for you to ask questions and review common concerns.

Interesting leadership too.  http://www.pandemicprep.org/le...
