Here's Help for Food Bill

With food, gasoline, and other bills skyrocketing, and the economy slowing, I figure a lot of people may not have extra money for prep items right now. I wanted to pass along a place where you can get a little relief from your regular grocery bill. For $30, you can get a box of food to help feed a family of four for a week. They also have other meat/steak boxes that can be purchased.

I am not affiliated with this organization or any of the churches that distribute food, but I know a lot of people/families who take advantage of it. There are no applications/qualifications, or limits on the amount of food ordered.

It is too late to order for March. Here's a sample of April's menu:

2 lb. Fully Cooked Meatloaf
1 lb. Beef Fajita Strips
3 lb. Breaded Frying Chicken
2 lb. St. Louis Style Ribs
2 lb. Lasagna Dinner Entree
1 lb. Gourmet Sausage
1 lb. Fully Cooked Meatballs
16 oz Broccoli
15 oz.Refried Beans
12 ct. Tortillas
26 oz. Pasta Sauce
16 oz. Pasta
6 oz. Pancake Mix
16 oz Fresh Carrots
3 lb. Golden Yukon Potatoes
4 oz. Chicken Noodle Soup (Makes 64 oz.)
4 lb. California Oranges
 Dessert Item

community oriented post
and thank you!

This organization is impressive.
I had read about Angel Food Ministries on another forum and when I realized they had an office in my hometown, some friends and I collaborated to buy a box.  We received much more food than could have been purchased in grocery stores for $30 and the quality was good.  Some of the steaks were not the best, but believe me, hungry people wouldn't have complained.  I liked the fact that bags of dried beans for soups, pancake mixes, bags of potatoes, etc. were included because they are so suitable for basic cooking in a crisis.  In short, this is a worthy program and I hope many financially-stressed families learn to take advantage of this opportunity to fill their pantries.

sub par steaks
While they may not do well on a grill, pounded with a meat hammer with seasoned flour and graised gently in tomato juice/V8 etc it makes a tasty meal. Growing up my mom called it Swiss Steak.

Cut up into smaller pieces, marinate with wine, vinegar or lemon juice and make a stew with pangravy or use just meat and gravy and top with rice or noodles. Lotsa ways to use subprime beef! Always good in a crock pot.

Wrap well and roll over a tough steak with your car-  instant tenderization! Cut into matchstick size pieces and stirfry.

It is better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret.

Grace RN, that's a good idea!

I'm serious!
Tested the theory myself with a piece of chuck-tenderized nicely.

Bless you, tjclaw1!
I did not know about this, and it turns out we have a couple of participating organizations right here where I live.  I'm still able to prep and all, but I have a friend who is really struggling with high prices just to feed herself and her daughter.  I told her about this, and she's signing up.  BTW, it is not too late to order for March here, and the menu is a little different.  There may be regional differences or something.

I just know that my friend hasn't been buying much meat because she is on a fixed income.  Her mortgage company tacked $100 per month onto her monthly payment to increase her escrow.  That means she has $100 less per month for groceries.  Taxes rose a lot on her modest home, but they also padded her escrow so that it would never get to $0.  With food prices rising sharply, this will really help her make ends meet.

Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute!

Thank You!
I've passed this on to the social work department in my hospital and to the staff. Given the 'recession' we're in but no one willing to 'call it' yet, alot of people out of work or reduced hours cna use this.

What a wonderful project!

This is an AMAZING Model!!!
Thank you tjclaw1 for sharing this.  I looked at their promotional video (took a long time to load and it was not in sync, but you MUST see it).  No matter what you believe, my jaw just dropped when I saw what they are doing.  Their network (active in 35 states) provide these food boxes to 10s of thousands of people each month!  Refrigerated TRUCKS bring the food to the various sites.  This just seems to be a much larger operation than I have ever heard about; but maybe I am just uninformed.

I think it is an amazing model that could be used during a pandemic.  I don't know how much "surge" capacity their operation has, but IMHO someone in Georgia needs to talk to the coordinators of the Angel Food Network!!!  I think it is worth us looking into.  Or maybe it represents a pandemic education opportunity at all the sites across the country.

model for food distribution
if we could have the DNA of the model posted publicly, many other places would be able to copy it

New LDS Pre-Packaged Foods
Here's something new from the LDS people:

https://www.ldscatalog.com/web...

The starter kits, which include two #10 cans of hard red winter wheat, two #10 cans of rice, one can of beans, and one can of oats, are available on the site now. It costs about $25 for the starter kit.  Might make a nice gift. Starting March 22, individual pre-packaged cases of six cans of wheat, rice, beans, and oats will also be available.

They are selling prep items at cost. I don't live close to an LDS center, so this might be a good option for helping with food storage costs.

Again, I have no affiliation with LDS, but these people know how to store food for long term and I've learned a lot from their on-line publications.

#10 cans...
hold:
5.8 lbs of hard red wheat
5.3 lbs of beans
5.7 lbs of rice
3.2 lbs of regular oats
