I'm perfectly prepared to make a provinces list!
thanks!!

Provincial diaries
There are too few of us Canadians posting and our English-speaking population density here in Canada is too skewed to Ontario and a small number of large cities elsewhere to make separate diaries by each province very practical.

I'll set up a diary for Western Canada, although I don't think it will be very active.

That would leave one geographic area uncovered: Eastern Canada, excluding Ontario. Again, I don't think the diary would be very active.

we will likely be getting more people all the time
...from all over and if a place is set up for them to go to talk to others in their region, well that's all good. Though I know what you mean, I think I might be the only one from Manitoba:-).

I'd post in the regional diary though, just in case:-)

What area of the province do you live in (if you want to say), I'm about an hour north of Wpg.- a small town.

CBC The Current today discussed Triage in Pandemic
Anybody happen to catch Anna Maria Tremonti this a.m.?
She interviewed several people about the new Ontario 'triage' system to be used in a pandemic (we discussed this paper on the Old Forum briefly) Essentially if you are over 85 dont expect anything more than palliative care for pandemic flu - likewise over 60 if you suffer from other life threatening or wasting diseases like ALZ,ALS,cancer, stroke, cognitive impairment and so on. One of the authors of the paper ?Dr Christian said, well doctors make these life/death decisions all the time anyway - (I got the impression that they just arent written down anywhere formal) The next interview was with a medical ethicist who may have been shellshocked still if only recent realization of the whole nightmare, so didnt say much. Third was our hero Dr Allison McGirr - who was very practical and straightforward, said it would be very tough - the few resources wd be quickly overwhelmed and triage the only sensible route.
That's all I am able to recall - anybody else hear it or have any comments?

Programme name? To search for Re-run Tks n/t

Ontario issues new biosecurity protocol for backyard flocks
http://tinyurl.com/y...

Information for Poultry and Livestock Producers
Bird owners, including hobbyists and those raising non-quota poultry, should follow biosecurity basics to protect their birds from possible infection:

Restrict visitor access. People can bring diseases onto your farm, especially if they own or have been in contact with other birds. Contact with your birds should be restricted to those caring for them. It is a good idea to have separate clothing and footwear for use when dealing with your birds.

Prevent contact with wild birds and other animals. Keep your birds in an enclosed or screened in area, and protect their food and water from contamination.

Don't bring disease home. New additions or birds that have been at a fair or market should be isolated and observed for signs of disease for at least two weeks before joining the flock. Equipment such as cages should not be shared with other bird owners. Any shared equipment should be thoroughly washed and disinfected.

Keep it clean. Routinely wash and disinfect cages, feed and water surfaces, boots and any equipment that comes in contact with the birds or their droppings. Wash your hands thoroughly after dealing with the birds.

Recognize and report illness. Early detection is critical in successfully dealing with a disease outbreak. It is better to be overcautious than too late. If your birds show signs of disease, such as depression, abnormal egg production or feed consumption, respiratory problems, diarrhea, or sudden death, call your local veterinarian or contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency immediately.
Can influenza viruses pass on to other livestock?

Yes. Some influenzas can affect other species, most commonly swine. They can be spread in a variety of ways, including movements of contaminated or infected animals or people.

What should producers do if they think their animals have influenza?

It is always important to contact your veterinarian when you have sick animals, or notice any significant changes in production.

If clinical signs are noticed or suspected in poultry, contact your veterinarian or the CFIA office in your area. Producers are obligated to report any suspicion of avian influenza because it is a reportable disease under the Health of Animals Act.

Is it safe to work with animals infected with avian influenza?

Individuals working with sick birds or livestock should always follow strict infection control measures.

The following precautions are recommended:

wash hands frequently and thoroughly after handling animals and before eating or drinking;
wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as mask, gloves, safety goggles, coveralls, shoes/boots, and hair covers.

Toronto Health Officials Warn Of Deadly Meningitis C Scare At Local Bar
I heard on the radio last night. This is not bird flu, but I saw another post some where about another country with Meningitis, so I thought at least people should be aware of this story.

cross-posted to today's news thread
Ontario: Province creating own centre for infectious disease control in wake of SARS

TORONTO (CP) - Ontario is creating a centre for disease control so it can be better prepared for another SARS outbreak or flu pandemic, The Canadian Press has learned.

The provincial government is set to introduce legislation Tuesday that would create the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion, roughly similar to the Centers for Disease Control in the United States, government sources say.

The arm's-length agency will research infectious diseases and could be called upon to help in a public health emergency like a disease outbreak.

The centre would also be responsible for health promotion and environmental health to reduce the potential for a public health emergency.

"While we hope we never face an outbreak or public health emergency, we have to be prepared," a government source said. "By bringing together experts to focus on health research, Ontario families will be better protected against future outbreaks and emergencies."

Details of the centre - including a budget and location - still have to be finalized. The government hopes to pass legislation establishing the centre by the spring.

If the legislation passes, Ontario will be one of the few provinces with its own centre of disease control. British Columbia has one based at the University of British Columbia, while Quebec also has its own public health institute..."
