Egypt
Monufiya governorate: Two suspected human H5N1 cases were reported, including a 14yo boy and a 30yo woman (Feb. 27).
India
Karnataka state: An unidentified viral fever has killed five people within two weeks and has sickened a large number of people in Honavar in Uttara Kannada district; monkey fever and dengue fever were listed as possible causes (Feb. 22).
West Bengal state: An H5N1 outbreak in birds was reported in Pendong village in Kurseong sub-division of Darjeeling Hills (Feb. 25).
Indonesia
Editor's note: Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari announced that human H5N1 deaths would no longer be publicly reported as they occur, but will be reported periodically. In addition, Indonesia has not reported bird flu outbreaks in animals to the OIE since September 2006. Therefore, local media reports are currently the only available timely information source of H5N1 human cases and bird outbreaks in Indonesia.
Indonesia: Java Island
Banten: A 2yo from Cilenggang village, Serpong subdistrict in South Tangerang City who developed symptoms Feb. 14, was initially diagnosed with dengue fever, and was reported by a local health official as having tested positive for H5N1; the child died (Feb. 22). A 15yo boy and a 2yo, both residents of Geruduk village, Sepatan subdistrict, Tangerang regency, have been hospitalized as suspected H5N1 patients (Feb. 22 and Feb. 23). Both patients were reported to have tested negative for H5N1 (Feb. 28).
Central Java: Two cousins (a 5yo and a 1yo) who lived in adjacent houses in Dompol village, Kemalang subdistrict in Klaten regency have been hospitalized as suspected H5N1 patients; the 5yo was hospitalized Feb. 24 and the 1yo was hospitalized Feb. 25; chickens that died suddenly at their home tested positive for H5N1 (Feb. 25 and Feb. 27). A 4yo from Plawangan village, Kragan subdistrict in Rembang regency was hospitalized as a suspected H5N1 patient; test results were reported to be negative for H5N1 (Feb. 24). H5N1 outbreaks in poultry were reported in: - Gemantar village, Selogiri subdistrict in Wonogiri regency (Feb. 22)
- Sidoharjo, Plupuh, Kedawung, and Gemolong Tanon subdistricts in Sragen regency (Feb. 23), and
- Piji village, Bagelen district, Purworejo regency (suspected, Feb. 28).
East Java: H5N1 outbreaks in poultry were reported in Madiun regency (in Kresek village in Wungu subdistrict, and in Winongo in Manguharjo subdistrict) and in Bojonegoro regency (in Ngraho subdistrict and Baureno City) (Feb. 23, Feb. 24 and Feb. 27).
West Java: An 8yo suspected H5N1 patient from Sukarahayu village, Tambelang subdistrict in Bekasi regency died; the news reported mentioned another death in the village in early February [also suspected to be H5N1?] (Feb. 28). H5N1 outbreaks in birds were reported in Ciseupan village, Ujung Berung subdistrict in Bandung (Feb. 26) and in Darangdan subdistrict in Purwakarta regency (Feb. 27).
Indonesia: Lesser Sunda Islands
Bali: Sudden chicken deaths were reported in Bali's provincial capital of Denpasar, just 2 kilometers from the mayor's office; initial tests were positive for bird flu (Feb. 24).
Indonesia: Sumatra Islands
Aceh: An unidentified disease has killed thousands of chickens in Meurah Mulia district, North Aceh (Feb. 24).
North Sumatra: H5N1 outbreaks in chickens were reported in Teluk Mengkudu and Sei Rampah subdistricts of Serdang Bedagai regency (Feb. 21).
Japan
Aichi prefecture: High-path H7 avian influenza was reported at a quail farm in Toyohashi (Feb. 27).
Nepal
Koshi zone: Sudden poultry deaths were reported in Tankisinuwari in Morang district; initial tests were negative for avian influenza (Feb. 28).
Saudi Arabia
Asir province: Chicken deaths were reported on a private farm in the Haraf district of Bisha; bronchitis was reported to be the cause (Feb. 23).
United Kingdom: England
East Anglia: Birds at commercial turkey farms in Ubbeston in Suffolk and near Yaxham in Norfolk have tested positive for low-path avian flu (Feb. 26); it was identified as H6N1 (Feb. 27).
Vietnam
Dien Bien province: An H5N1 outbreak in ducks was reported (Feb. 26).
Ninh Binh province: The 32M from Kim Son district who developed symptoms Feb. 3, was hospitalized Feb. 5 and was confirmed positive for H5N1 last week died on Feb. 25 (Feb. 26 and WHO update).
Other Human Diseases
United States: Two pediatric deaths from seasonal influenza were reported in Maryland: one teenager's death was confirmed; one death suspected (Feb. 26)
