I am interested in getting a food vacume sealer
and I'm wondering if they are any good and if so what is a good brand?

I have the FoodSaver brand
My experience is that the plastic bags are expensive and a pain in the behind to use, so I generally use it to vacuum seal dry items in glass canning jars.  (You can use the jars and lids over and over again for dry storage.)

You just need to get the attachment that fits over a wide-mouth or narrow-mouth canning jar.  (There's a picture of the gizmo here.)

I recommend using the wide-mouth jars instead of the narrow ones because it's much easier to get the food in and out of the wide-mouths.

I've used this to seal dry mixes ("gift in a jar" type mixes), rice, orzo, pasta, couscous, bulgur, oats, lentils, beans, dried veggies, spices, seed packets, etc. in sizes from 1 cup to 1/2 gallon.

I've been using a FoodSaver mini...
I got it about 4 years ago, and yeah, it can be a pain to use but on the other hand I vacuum-sealed almost 20 pounds of dry white rice 3 years ago and it's still good and the bags are still air-tight! It's a FoodSaver brand, but similar to this one.  I lust after this one.
AlohaOR is right, the bags can be expensive, but other brands are no cheaper, and FoodSucker 'IS' the original.

I suggest you get the lowest-cost food saver and try it out. If you find you really like it, move up to the ones with more features at a later time...

Recall: flashlights set from Target
Target is recalling about 55,000 six-piece LED flashlight sets made in China after receiving four reports from users who had sustained minor burns to their hands, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The flashlights can overheat, smoke, melt and pose fire or burn hazards. They were sold at Target stores from October 2010 to December 2011 for about $10 per set.

The flashlights are made of silver plastic with black rubber around the handle and light base. The UPC code 490021010049 is printed on the back of the package. The six-flashlight set includes two small flashlights measuring about three inches long, two medium flashlights about six inches long and two large flashlights about 7.5-inches long.

Target is offering a full refund. For more information, call target at 800-440-0680 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, or visit target.com.

The Committee meets three times a year in Washington, DC. These meetings are open to the public. Time is allotted at every meeting for public response and comment.

NVAC Pre-registration is required for public attendance, webinar, and comments.

It's interesting to hear the aspects these meetings cover.
I've listened to webinars (NVAC and NBSB) in past years (on my landline phone).  The committees report on work they've done since the last meeting; it's impressive, especially considering that members have full-time jobs, too.  They have a lot to cover, so they don't drone on; they're efficient.

Chemicals linked to lower vaccine response in children
Not exactly flu, but I wonder if there's also some effect on flu vaccines:

I think it's reasonable to assume that flu-vaccine response would be affected as much as any other vaccine's.

PFCs are in so many things in my house.  yuck!  I didn't realize it.  The list of items containing them is so long, and the body systems that they harm are many too.   Not comfortable to digest....

Thoughts on direct contact modes?
I noticed in the commentary on this site, researchers suggest that aerosols most likely the primary mode of flu transmission, whereas direct contact is more likey in tropical environments. (Re; Humidity and Temp as factors).

I am wondering about direct contact and transmission modes, and am suggesting perhaps dining areas where people  congregate could be worthy of analysis.

By observation, I think that personal habits may play a major role contributing to direct contact modes of transmission. Where people dine, it seems to me very likely that infected individuals are very capable of not only spreading flu aerosols, but flu to many surfaces. To wit, many patrons eat with their fingers in their mouths, cough on their hands or sleeves, dunk their fingers into puddings and salad bars, run their hands on almost any surface, etc. An inadvertent contagious person will do the same, and an inadvertent naive (meaning uncomtaminated I just learned) patron will contract those flu viruses in the same manner, transporting to their own mouths, eyes, nose, etc.

And perhaps this is compounded by the fact that many employees of restaurants and diners will work when sick. Their germs go everywhere.

What struck me in the past was an article mentioning that doctors entering rooms with many sick (flu) individuals, left without being contaminated and getting sick. This might be explained that the larger flu aerosols settle quickly. Or, from some excellent research by  Anice C. Lowen1*, Samira Mubareka1, John Steel1, Peter Palese1,2*
found that varying temperature and humidity played a key role in transmission. (Maybe the rooms were warm and humid.)

To bolster my idea,  the first reported case in the US (if I have my facts correct) was of a cook in Kansas. Interesting. He was followed by 100 others who ate there. Now that could be the aerosols at the cafeteria (or dining hall), or from direct contact from the virus, But this episode may lend credence to my notion that dining areas may be notorious areas for flu spread. Did cook acquire the flu virus, and then spread it to those diners? Perhaps the summer time virulence of that flu can be explained in this manner?

Conclusion: perhaps dining areas, or where ever people gather to eat or acquire food, and the habits of servers or patrons, may be a major factor in direct contact flu transmission, and worthy of deeper study (if not done already), imho. MM

Knives and forks are probably a part of the equation too
and coffee and tea areas in businesses.

Most reports I've seen put hand to mouth transmission as the most likely vector in all regions. It's why masks don't feature in plans for the public. However, I think masks would help remind people not to touch their mouths.

However, in his last segment, he had a panel of 4 women. He asked if the preppers had gone overboard. A newswoman/comedienne (?) said what a downer it would be to spend any time with the preppers who've gone overboard.  A real newswoman seemed to appreciate the worth of being prepared.  Overall, it was a positive to discuss the subject, IMO.

Bird Flu Less Deadly than Supposed

Bird flu may be less deadly than supposed, based on blood serum evidence of many past mild infections in Asia, a biomedical team reported Thursday.

"WHO does not account for a majority of infections, but rather the select few hospitalized cases that are more likely to be severe," says the study led by microbiologist Taia Wang of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. That could mean an undercount of patients who suffer only minor bird flu illness, inflating the death rate.

The team compiled evidence of antibodies to the virus collected from 12,677 Asians, Africans and Europeans in 27 studies dating from 1997 to 2009. The team estimates that about 1.2% of them had survived mild bird flu cases. That corresponds to "millions of people who have been infected worldwide,"

Something new has been added
You may notice that immediately under the byline for each diary on the front page, you're now seeing three new buttons. Those are to allow readers to easily share links with Facebook, Twitter and a number of other social media outlets (found under the "More" heading). This feature was actually added with an upgrade to the software a while back but we're just getting around to trying it out now.

There are also specific buttons available for LinkedIn and Google+ but I didn't turn those on. Should I? I don't use either one. I've always had the impression that LinkedIn was very much business-oriented and I don't have a good sense of the popularity of Google+ but maybe someone else here can provide some feedback on either one.

Warning: chlorine pellets can make trouble
My sealed plastic jug of chlorine pellets split without my noticing, and now I have lots of corrosion to clean up, as well as having to dispose of the pellets (probably at a hazardous waste facility).  I guess I'm lucky that I found the mess before the humid summer set in.  There are warnings about not adding water to the pellets because they can catch fire.  

As it is, 2 cans of tire inflator and a can of weed killer rusted and have to be trashed or disposed of.  And the jars I had packages of seeds stored in, now have corroded lids.  (Those items were in the basement on the same table as the chlorine pellets.) And my galvanized pail with wringer doesn't look galvanized anymore, but it had been on the floor under the table.  Etc.

Eastern US storms kill 13, cut power to millions
Millions across the mid-Atlantic region sweltered Saturday in the aftermath of violent storms that pummeled the eastern U.S. with high winds and downed trees, killing at least 13 people and leaving 3 million without power during a heat wave.

Power officials said the outages wouldn't be repaired for several days to a week, likening the damage to a serious hurricane. Emergencies were declared in Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, the District of Columbia and Virginia, where Gov. Bob McDonnell said the state had its largest non-hurricane outage in history, as more storms threatened. "This is a very dangerous situation," the governor said.

And then last night, we were under tornado warnings for almost 4 hours right here in my backyard.  Gotta say, being covered by blankets and pillows, lying in a cold bathtup, is not exactly the way I wanted to spend my evening. OTOH--it beats the alternative if a twister were to hit...

Can a solar wind hurt our computers?
I've been checking on the Space Weather site regularly, just in case it can.  Now there's a very large group of spots on the sun pointing toward Earth, and I'm going to put my laptop in a metal file cabinet (while I'm not using it, at least).  

DARK HOLE IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE: Ultraviolet telescopes onboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory are monitoring a vast dark hole--a "coronal hole"--in the sun's upper atmosphere. It has just turned directly toward Earth:

Coronal holes are places where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows the solar wind to escape. A stream of solar wind flowing from this particular gap is en route to Earth, due to arrive on July 2nd or 3rd. The impact could spark geomagnetic storms and auroras.

Pandemic, the board game
My 20yo son, who has never shown much interest in public health or pandemic readiness, came home raving about playing a new (to him) board game - Pandemic (reviewed here).  It's a collaborative game:
You are specialists at the CDC/Atlanta where you watch several virulent diseases break out simultaneously all over the world. The team mission is to prevent a worldwide pandemic outbreak, treating hot spots while researching cures for each of the four plagues before they get out of hand.

He and his friends had so much fun that they played 3 rounds of it, and wished that the game lasted longer.

Who would've thought that pandemics could be so entertaining?

Logging on FW is working oddly recently.
I sign in and can see, for example, (12 Comments, 4 new, 6 words in story) in the center of the front page, but my name doesn't appear, and there aren't any red (new) indicators in the Recent Diaries right-hand sidebar.

After clicking on a diary link, my name appears, and going back to the Home page, the Recent Diaries bar has the normal appearance

Are you still seeing the same issue?
I normally just stay logged in but since your original comment, I've made a point of logging out on my way out the door so that when I return, I have to log in again and can check to see if anything's amiss. But so far, it's working for me the way it should.

A PROCLAMATION

As thousands of our fellow Americans respond to and recover from the damage done by Hurricane Isaac, we are called to remember that throughout our history, emergencies and natural disasters have tested the fabric of our country.  During National Preparedness Month, we renew our commitment to promoting emergency preparedness in homes, businesses, and communities nationwide, and to building an America more ready and resilient than ever before.

Each of us has an important role to play in bolstering our preparedness for disasters of all types -- from cyber incidents and acts of terrorism to tornadoes and flooding.  That is why my Administration is pursuing an approach to emergency management that engages the whole community -- from Federal, State, local, and tribal governments to the private sector, nonprofits, faith based organizations, and the general public.  I encourage all Americans to visit www.Ready.gov or www.Listo.gov to learn more about the risks facing their communities, find out what they can do to prepare, and join thousands of individuals from coast to coast by becoming a member of the National Preparedness Coalition.  Individuals and families can also take action by building a disaster supply kit with food, water, and essential supplies in case of emergency, and by developing and sharing an emergency plan with their loved ones.

As cities and towns across our country recover from natural disasters that have spanned historic drought to devastating wildfires and storms, we are reminded of the spirit of resilience that binds us together as one people and as one American family.  This month, let us honor that spirit by standing with all those affected by recent severe weather, as well as past disasters, and by taking the steps we can to protect our loved ones and our communities before disaster strikes.

I got an email about a reduced price with free shipping on the Volcano three-fuel stove (which I have already bought).  http://www.volcanogrills.com/h...  $149.99 for stove, propane burner, lid (it's insulated, for using stove as an oven), storage/carry bag, and skewers.  (I don't want to think about how much I paid for all of mine bought separately....)  I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard that it's handy during power outages and camping trips (if going by car, because some of the stove is cast iron), as well as backyard cooking.  It's a Hallowe'en sale, but they didn't say when the sale price ends.

By now you've probably realized that your account has been nuked. If you're paying attention to the way this place works, you should see this.

Since seniors as a group can have a particular problem dealing with influenza, my initial response to what appeared to be spam was to express my concern and wait for a reaction. I wanted to see where you were going with this.

Your response was to start filling up the list of diaries with talking points and links designed to drive traffic away from us to sites of your choosing in the ultimate service of a commercial enterprise. And with nary a mention of the subject which is the reason this site exists. Just about the dictionary definition of spam.

So your account is locked and your diaries and comments have dropped out of sight. If you want to discuss it, look for the Contacts list on the right sidebar near the top -- my name is an email link.
