New Zealand: The medical officer of health for Canterbury says other parts of the country should consider extending the period for free flu vaccinations.
Alistair Humphrey says the number of people suffering from influenza in his region has almost reached its peak, but other areas are a few weeks behind. Dr Humphrey says increasing numbers are being admitted to Christchurch Hospital, and a special influenza ward has been set up.

He predicts the number of people affected by this year's strain may exceed that of the 2009 swine flu epidemic.

Maharashtra: Sale of vaccine shoots up as swine flu cases rise sharply
The spurt in swine flu cases and the two deaths in July have boosted the sale of vaccines that provide immunity against the H1N1 virus by more than 50%, said druggists. On Sunday, 10 more cases of swine flu were reported taking the total number to 151 since January. Till June 30, the city had recorded 58 cases; the rest of the 93 cases have been reported in the past three weeks.

"The demand is high. The sale of the trivalent influenza vaccine, which immunises a person against H3N2, H1N1 and influenza B virus, has nearly doubled. (Snip)

Shop owners said pharmaceutical companies have launched trivalent vaccines in July itself instead of in the winter months. "Paediatricians give children the vaccine so that they develop immunity against flu and H1N1," (Snip)

Doctors said diagnostic swab testing has also increased. Health officials said more people test positive as the virus is air-borne. (Snip)

"There are no government guidelines regarding vaccinations. While doctors and paramedical staff should get vaccinated, otherwise, only those with compromised immunity, diabetics, tuberculosis and pregnant women, should get vaccinated," said (Snip) state epidemiologist, directorate of health services. http://www.hindustantimes.com/...

New Zealand: Auckland after-hours clinics struggle to cope with flu patients
Some of Auckland's after-hours medical clinics have suffered a double-hit of staff sickness and a flood of patients, as the winter flu season intensifies.

The region's Waitemata and Counties Manukau health districts have the country's highest per-capita rates of influenza-like consultations, according to ongoing surveillance for the Health Ministry at "sentinel" general practices, although Canterbury has been worst affected this winter. It appears that the Auckland region outbreaks are highly localised.

While some general practitioners told the Herald yesterday they were seeing relatively few flu-like cases, the White Cross group, which runs after-hours accident and medical clinics, reported a big increase. "We've been seeing a lot of influenza-type illness in the last four to six weeks, particularly in our Glenfield, New Lynn and Henderson clinics," said chief executive Dr Alistair Sullivan.

"They are running about 15 to 20 per cent above normal volumes for this time of year - an extra 50 to 100 patients per day across those three.

"A lot of staff - nurses and doctors - are coming down sick as well." Up to 15 per cent of staff were off sick at any one time, which was unusually high, even for winter, Dr Sullivan said. Senior management, including himself, were having to help fill some shifts at short notice. Continued: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/heal...
