US: Flu hits Wichita--What you need to know (Kansas)
The flu season has begun in Wichita.  Both Wesley and Via Christi hospitals confirm they have admitted patients suffering from the flu.

(Snip)

Pharmacist George Saghbene says there may be more cases out there than health officials realize. "Most people self-treat," Saghbene says.  "They don't go to the doctor unless they feel horrible." He says once the flu hits, you're stuck with it for seven to ten days--and it won't be much fun. "With the flu your body aches, you feel like you've been hit by a truck," (Snip).

Barney's is all stocked up on products that can reduce your symptoms and make you feel a little better.  But the bottom line is, if you get the flu you are going to suffer. "All those over-the-counter medications--they are really going to ease up the symptoms," Saghbene says.  "But it's not going to take care of one hundred percent of everything you got."

He recommends medicine that treats individual symptoms rather than the all-in-one products.  First and foremost though, he says lots of liquids and lots of rest will help you recover as fast as possible. (Snip) those who are very old, very young or have a chronic medical condition should see a doctor if they get sick.  If you're taking prescription medication consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any over-the-counter medicine.

It's not too late to get a flu shot. (Snip) http://www.kwch.com/news/kwch-...

US: Influenza already hitting hard, so get vaccinated, officials urge (Utah)
OGDEN - The Weber-Morgan Health Department has immunized more than 1,800 elementary school students and faculty members for influenza this year, and more than 300 have received a DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) vaccine.

Influenza season is here, and although the state has only seen minimal activity so far, it expects the numbers to begin increasing from November to March.

So far, from Sept. 30 to Nov. 3, four Utahns have been hospitalized for influenza.

"The official flu season is November through March, but in recent years, we have had reported flu cases outside of those months," said Michelle Singleton, Weber-Morgan Health Department immunization program manager. "We never try to outguess the flu. Every time we try, we are surprised."

The health department began giving seasonal flu shots in the elementary schools last year, Singleton said. Continued: http://www.standard.net/storie...

India: Chicken sales slump 60% in city after bird flu scare (Karnataka)
Bird flu fear has brought down the sale of chicken by about 60 per cent in the city, affecting over 45 lakh people who are dependent on the industry.

(Snip)

The association sought to allay fears (Snip), stressing that the avian influenza (H5N1) broke out only at the Central Poultry Development Organisation at Hesaragatta.

"Broiler and other chicken, which are reared in Karnataka, are unaffected. There is not a single case of a poultry farm labourer or those working in chicken stalls or those who ate chicken having been infected with bird flu," (Snip) experts have said chicken cooked above 70 degrees Celsius is safe to eat. http://www.asianage.com/bengal...

Bangladesh: DLS to launch bird flu vaccine test
Director of Department of Livestock Services (DLS) will launch the bird flu vaccine programme experimentally on November 20 to check the fatal virus from infecting the local poultry industry, (Snip) The immunisation programme will be launched (Snip) in Gazipur district.

(Snip)

The vaccination will begin experimentally in Gazipur district and partly in one poultry hatchery and five farms in Kishorganj in Dhaka division (Snip).

He said, poultry producers can afford the vaccine cost varying between Tk 1.80 and Tk 5.0 for each poultry bird. The DLS director, however, said the farmers and the consumers are interested to save themselves from the deadly bird flu or H5N1 virus, so even if the cost of a vaccine is Tk 10 per chicken, there will be no objection from them.

(Snip) drug regulatory authority allowed three renowned drug companies to import avian influenza vaccine from the US, the Netherlands and China. "If we get a positive result, we will apply the medicine across the country," said Mr Hossain.

(Snip) the number of farms has come down to 60,824 from 114,763 over the last two years following the spread of bird flu, (Snip).

Poultry farmers repeatedly demanded that the authorities concerned allow vaccine against the influenza as it spread epidemically in the country and destroyed millions of chickens in the last six years. http://www.thefinancialexpress...
