The current flu outbreak in Hong Kong, although tragically causing the deaths of young children and such disruptions, is offering everyone a good chance to observe an outbreak almost in real time. The frequently updated information from the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection is IMO offering a remarkably good opportunity for those of us who want to understand epidemiology. Now I'm no epidemiologist, and I'm trying to learn as much as is anyone else! This first set of charts (March 18) is already showing some interesting lessons, especially in how to read charts. I believe there's a lot more we can learn over the coming weeks, to see how this develops.

The following is a synopsis of what has been happening with the flu outbreaks in schools, and the events leading up to school closure. Due to the large amount of media reports, I am unable to quote each in detail, but the most important sources are referenced.
Also, because of the length of the diary, the epidemiology and investigation of the outbreak especially the fatal cases will be written up in part 2.
