Organizing informative diaries

by: FloridaGirl

(A useful discussion - promoted by DemFromCT)

I visited the other sites for some ideas on organizing diaries.  I did not see any indexing of the "information" diaries with permanent locations, other than something simular to the "How To" that is located on the left side here. Is that area self limiting?

Or should there be a link that takes you to a web page (i.e. like the html page you can create) that has links to other (html) information pages?

Flu Wiki 1 has tons of information and creating that same type of library of information should be easily and readily available. If information is created in a diary, will comments or replies drive the availability to view?

Should I just wait and see how this will be organized?

Searching Flu Wiki Forum

by: DemFromCT

Fri Jun 20, 2008 at 16:16:28 PM EDT

Flu Wiki is a large site, and searching can help you find things.

The simplest way to search is the Search box to the left. You can search either diaries or comments. if you click 'advanced search', you can also search for users, the name of specific posters, 'comments by' (DemFromCT, e.g.), or comments that include DemFromCT.

Hello FlyLady Friends,

I thought we could start a diary to plan around the potential for bird flu and work that planning into the FlyLady system.

For anyone who wants to know more about the free FlyLady system, you can check out her homepage at www.flylady.net

A Worthwhile Exercise

by: LauraB

Sun Jul 22, 2007 at 18:42:00 PM EDT

Are you someone who preps and then forgets?  Have you taken the time to count how many calories you've stored away?  Counted number of meals?

Well, I didn't - until this weekend.  My preps were a mess - I had lost track of when stuff expired, wasn't sure where certain thigns were, etc.  More importantly, I really wasn't sure how many calories I had stored and whether it would be enough to feed my family.

So, I busted my a$$ and moved everything, sorted out the old or about to expire, put everything in a spreadsheet that included:
  Item
  Quantity
  # Portions
Calories - both by portion and total
Type of Items (snack, main dish, etc)

What did I learn?  PLENTY:

- I don't have nearly as much as I thought I did in terms of calories.  When I added it all up, and include what I normally have on hand I think I can squeeze it to three months exactly.  I was hoping it was more like four.  I probably over-estimated the kids calorie needs a bit but I'd rather over-do it than not have enough.

- It's so much easier to have it all in only one or two places.  I had stuff all over before.  Now I can find things when I need them.  If TSHTF and I'm worried about theft, then they'll go back to their hiding spots.

- Tracking expiration dates is important.  I had a lot that expired or was about to (the food bank and senior center were more than happy to take it all).  Now that I have it all on the PC, I can track what needs to be used up or find it for donations.  Sadly I have a great deal that expires in the spring next year - exactly two years after I started prepping in earnest.

- Food is not a meal.  What I mean by that is a good portion of calories are actually oils and milk.  That does not make a meal - here honey, have a spooonful of olive oil!  I know it counts for calories but won't make a toddler happy when he's hungry.  I also sorted things by type of food so I can focus more on meal items vs ingredients or snacks.

- Because I'm worried about getting enough fruits and veggies (assuming fresh won't be available) I've accumulated plenty of canned items.  However, they're low calorie.  I will focus more on calorie-rich foods such as nuts, Mac N'Cheese(the kind with the Velveeta-like cheese packet is quite high calorie and easy to prepare),pancakes/waffles, flavored instant oatmeal, canned ravioli/spaghetti, certain soups like Chunky brand.

Now that I've rambled on, I'm wondering if anyone has bits of prepping wisdom that they've learned along the way. This whole exercise was a PITA but I am SO GLAD I did it.  I know many of you are far more experienced than I - I am probably forgetting some important things.  Thoughts?

CLICK HERE **Diary List**: Titles & Links (to Present) Searchable

by: bgw in MT

Sat Jan 13, 2007 at 20:24:14 PM EST

I have cobbled the previous diary lists together to make one searchable list. I'm-Working-On-It from Old Yeller thought this would be an easier way to find old threads that have expired from the recent diary box. At her request there is a minimum amount of space between diary titles so there is less scrolling involved. Please let me know if any links are broken or send you back to the wrong page.

After the Dust Settles

by: Edna Mode

Wed Jan 10, 2007 at 10:16:13 AM EST

There was a thread on the old forum about establishing a meeting place where wikians could go to reconnect after the pandemic is over.

I didn't follow the thread closely.

I felt (and feel) that none of us can possibly predict the state of affairs in the world, our respective countries, states, cities, towns, or our personal lives at that point, and I don't think a face-to-face is altogether practical.

But...

Robust electricity supply in a pandemic- turbines on power-phone and light poles

by: clark

Wed Dec 06, 2006 at 17:38:22 PM EST

We are currently having a big debate about wind powered turbines here in New Zealand. People are worried about the effect on the landscape if huge towers with turbines line the ridges.

My friend Bill M suggested that we put small wind turbines on power poles, light poles and telephone poles that stand in windy places. There are millions of them. Imagine if all of the lightpoles on Windy Drive had little wind turbines spinning away? They could be colourful, exciting attractions, as well as helping to power our microwaves and charge our cell phones.

Here are the advantages.

(1) The tower (the pole) is prexisting.
(2) The wiring into the national grid is already there.
(3) The land is already owned or rented by the line company, city or phone company.
(4) Power will be generated near to the consumers- in the case of street lights, the electricity generated could be totally or partially used by the street light on the same pole
(5) cost- small wind turbines could be bought in bulk and be designed to clip onto the existing poles- which are already standardized- we could start out small, only using the most ideal sites and work our way through all of the suitable poles.
(6) Scalability - We could start out with 100 turbines in one community and if it is successful- end up with 100,000,000 turbines in every windy community around the world.
(7) Non controversial- if an individual or a community objected for any reason- the poles near their house or in their community could be skipped.
(8) Profitable and self financing- the turbines could be owned by Central Government, by Telecoms, by Power Companies, by Line companies, by City Council or by individuals.

Why not sell or rent them to individuals? For the price of a second hand car, a family could own 10 little turbines that generate electricty, which could offset their power bill or even pay them a monthly dividend.

Successive governments have talked about an unregulated electricity market. Why not have 100,000 little power companies as well as the big boys and girls.

What do other people think about this idea?

...but I think, all in all, the Moderators here deserve a roaring round of applause for getting this new site up and running as smoothly as it has. Except for a couple of hiccups that were not their fault, I've seen no problems with folks getting in here, learning how to generally navigate the site, and figure out where they are and what to do.
This new platform has already had some great reviews from other sites, and with over 6,000 visits in less than 72 hours, we're off to a fantastic start.
Thank you, DemFromCT, pogge, and all the others who have made this a trip well worth taking...!!

CLUSTER PAGE

Graph of Cluster size and frequency over Time

Clusters of H5N1 infections are important because they may indicate human to human transmission of H5N1 influenza. Alternatively, they may simply indicate common exposure to the virus from an environmental source, presumably avian.

A cluster here is defined as two or more individuals:
1. who are in close physical contact,
2. who become very sick with a respiratory disease, and
3. at least one of whom is a confirmed H5N1 influenza case.

This is a relatively liberal definition of a cluster. It is left to the reader to evaluate the significance of the information presented here.

Information is derived from several sources including: WHO avian influenza situation updates, ProMED and a paper published in Emerging Infectious Diseases in November 2005 - Family Clustering of Avian Influenza A (H5N1)

China - 2003 February
A family of 5 from Hong Kong visited Fujian province in Mainland China early in 2003. A mother went with two daughters and one son on January 25 2003. The 7 year old girl developed respiratory symptoms...
