ReadyMoms Local Community Events

by: Readymom

Fri Sep 05, 2008 at 11:00:10 AM EDT

I need a thread to post updates on what I'm up to, if that is oke. I have several events lined up over the next month, between my own local events and events that I'll be participating in as a result of ReadyMoms Alliance being at a couple of 'Roche' events.

Recently, I have been to our County 911 SummerFair, Dickinson College's 'National Night Out' Fair, and (on behalf of RMA) a Parners in Preparedness Panflu summit in Hershey PA for the Department of Health.

The PA DOH event resulted in significant Penna. contacts for future events. Those events include two upcoming events for Wyeth Pharmaceutical (in State College, PA -- they have also asked me to travel to NY and NJ for two more events. I will be participating in an event in Mechanicsburg PA for APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc.
(APIC East Central Pennsylvania Chapter on the 12th. I was recommended to be included in this meeting, by the doctor that I collaborate with, here in Central PA. He told me that when he recommended me, they were already trying to find me to ask me to participate!  :)

So, although Richard is have a tough time, in his area, so far, so good here in PA.

Speaking at the National Biodefense Science Board

by: SusanC

Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 22:43:43 PM EDT

On June 18th I attended the morning session of the National Biodefense Science Board meeting.  The meeting agenda is here http://www.hhs.gov/aspr/confer... Here's a brief synopsis of what transpired in that meeting http://www.fas.org/blog/ssp/20...

My main focus was on the presentation by ASTHO on their recent draft guidance on at risk populations and issues related to pandemic preparedness.  Prior to the meeting, we've had a robust discussion on this forum Not All Children are At Risk?

ReadyMoms in California-National PTA Convention

by: Readymom

Sun Jun 22, 2008 at 10:31:19 AM EDT

The past few days, I have had the privilege to met 'InKy', for the first time, at the National PTA Convention, in San Diego CA at a ReadyMoms event!  Attending this event is SusanC, InKy and myself.

Today, Sunday is our third day in 'sunny California'. It has been a very tiring three days and we have one last day (today) to reach as many PTA organizations from across the nation as we can to promote the panflu message - explaining the great risk that it is in regards to the children in schools across our country. We have one poster explaining that risk and an additional poster showing how the proper used of interventions and EARLY school closures can help to minimize that risk. You can view the posters over at FW (where RMA is storing our phots, etc. till our website is up and running) here: http://www.newfluwiki2.com/sho... .

The message is being received by the parents and PTA officials with some surprise. When we hand them the appendix from the CDC's CMG that is school specific, and tell them that in that guide is the mention that schools be aware they may need to close for 12 weeks, eyes widen and mouths open! They have NOT heard this message before our encounter.

I'll post more, but wanted to quickly get this first post out there to you all. k

With Summer Comes Opportunities!

by: Readymom

Tue Apr 08, 2008 at 19:23:06 PM EDT

and I've been running through my mind, an idea, the past couple of days, as I have been reading the Goju/Dem threads....

The weather is changing and there are a lot of events that communities are starting to plan from now till summer's end. A lot of these events would probably be large-group events. Most likely outside.

ACM's Maryland presentation

by: Average Concerned Mom

Wed Feb 27, 2008 at 09:21:33 AM EST

(Note, I edited the title to say "Maryland" so people in that state might take a look, see if they might be able to help!!)

OK, to follow up on Kobie's efforts (-;

I am going to try to bring a ReadyMoms display to a group of moms -- I have a booth at an area La Leche League convention next Saturday, March 8th, in Columbia MD.

This is not an "official" ReadyMoms' Alliance event, but I will be using their materials.

The conference is for LLL members in DC, MD and Delaware, and it is being held in Columbia MD on Sat. March 8th from 9 to 4:30.

I am a little nervous about it, because the past two booths I did were at national conferences where a lot of people already had a lot of knowledge about pandemic flu and the need to prepare.  I really haven't ever just brought a display to the general public as ReadyMom and Kobie and standingfirm and quilter (and others) have been writing about.   But I just want to see what happens, AND I really want to get the word out especially to moms of young children.   I saw this conference right in my area, and I figured, why not try it?

Please let me know if you are in the area and might be willing to help staff the booth!  (I could especially use help at 8 am unloading.)

email me at averageconcernedmom at hotmail dot com if you are interested

The ReadyMoms Toolkit: the First Cut

by: SusanC

Sun Feb 17, 2008 at 03:29:45 AM EST

otherwise also known as "The Moms Booth"!

UPDATE Feb 17, 2008.  This toolkit has been submitted for review to Promising Practices: Pandemic Preparedness Tools at CIDRAP.

The conceptual/intellectual and ethical framework for this model is outlined in this essay 'By Parents, for Families' written for the APHA Convention.  The vision, of where all this needs to go, is explored here ReadyMoms Alliance - After the National Emergency Management Summit.  It is a work in progress.

Click here for previous discussions and events, with better quality photos here. For reporting from the PHPrep Summit in Atlanta go here and scroll down.

ReadyMoms in Atlanta Feb. 19-22 - NEED HELP (plus REPORTING from the event!)

by: Readymom

Fri Feb 08, 2008 at 14:26:17 PM EST

This is a cry for help!

UPDATE from SusanC

It's been really great!  We've had such great responses to our plea for help, in such a short time!

Now we are set for having 3 people for each day, which is wonderful.  Barring any further unforseen circumstances, and fingers crossed, we will have a great time in Atlanta!

A great big THANK YOU to all who responded, whether with actual offers of help or with words of encouragement.  We cannot succeed without you.  We need you all.

And as usual we'll keep everyone posted on our progress!
