Swine Flu - REALITY CHECK ???

SWINE FLU COVERUP ? Listening to news - experts say this combination of the asian flu, swine flu, and American flus should not have occurred naturally. Hmmm,outbreak target teen ager,young adults and middle aged - not oldies and younglings ( latter aren't much of a threat). Mexican gov't targets big pig farm - me wonders were the owners trying to breed pigs with chickens? Poor chickens - He,he... Yes, me sees the flying pigs now? NOT LIKELY!!! Can you think of anything more dangerous and grossly incompetant than a Mexican BIOFARE LAB. Yes, kiddies - shades of the movie "Resident Evil" maybe upon us.. Alas, the sad truth is we will never know the truth - the powers that be love to keep us in the dark and feed us strange things (mushroom joke). Reality check - Hmmm, hard to say - but not at all impossible? Be Safe...

In Search of Understanding

I am writing this diary in order to seek clarity and a greater understanding of a developing H1N1 influenza situation for my family and community here in the greater Memphis area.
Today, according to one of my high school aged children a fellow student came into class late and presented a note to the teacher. After several moments of discussion between the two the child became upset and said loudly that; yes, my brother has tested positive for swine flu, but I have tested as clean.
So, now I have several concerns. Does this make any sense to the readers here? My understanding of this influenza is that a person can be asymptomatic for several days before becoming ill and that one of the primary means of limiting the spread of H1N1 is isolation. Additionally, with the way this was handled there is now a huge issue within the student body and I am sure the administration.
Any illumination the good folks here can provide would be of great assistance. I am not completely ignorant of the basic principles of infectious disease management and treatment since I served in the Army for 15 years of which 1/2 of that time was after I had trained as a senior corpsman.
Thanks to all for your assistance for your assistance at keeping me informed and managing the effects of rumors and situation management and communication.

Where is it?
The odd case here, the odd case there, more like the Scarlett Pimpernel at the moment.

We need serious information not speculation.
Where are the real statistics?
Why doesn't mexico test all the dead? Only takes a few hours nowadays to get a result not days.
How many cases have been reported?
Have the post mortem exams showed classic flu pneumonias or not?
Are any pigs ill?
Where is the pig connection? Somebody trying to downplay or what? Why not Avian flu 'cos it has a bit of that so they say. why not human because once again they say it has that too.

We are being fed BS and speculation. This is causing panic not proper prepping.
Just concerned that people are jumping the gun on nothing more than speculation not evidence.

I looked for another general rumor thread, and the last one I could find was from Mar of last year...

Must be the slow season.
Sorry I haven't been around for a while. Business has been keeping me quite occupied. ;)

Not a rumor, but an interesting conversation to prove just how small the world really is....

Anyway, Thursday nite I was sitting at the airport bar in Las Vegas waiting for my red eye to Detroit, when I struck up a conversation with a young woman seated beside me.

We talked about the economy, politics, and the financial meltdown crisis, (she works for a major bank in their investment department), and then as an end of the discussion throwaway, I told her that if it isn't a depression/ financial collapse that will get us, it will be bird flu.

Well, did I hit a hot button! Turns out her father is THE high muckety muck at Kroger that spearheaded, drove and completed the Kroger bird flu plan that was so talked about in the blogosphere a few years ago. Remember the discussions of how it seemed that at least someone "got it?". Well, because of his position, someone who got it was able to make things happen.

And he is definitely a major bird flu fanatic. Cabin in the hills, huge stockpiles of food, water, ammo, etc. Promises from his adult children to be ready to bug out at a moments notice. Always have ready cash. etc. etc.

Her take was that her father is a very serious, stable guy, and his concern was definitly way out of the character, in the sense that he is a bright, intellegent, level headed guy not given into doomerism flights of fantasy. And that he is/was highly concerned about a possible pandemic.

Anyway, it's always nice to know that my concerns are still being validated by others too.

I know it was originally indexed on the main Arabic page 'cause I posted it on the day it came out -- and that's how I found it. Oddly, it's still on the English index page:

Any significance to these "removals"? I dunno. Regarding the latest one -- one of those sus cases from Mansoura is (possibly) named Ibrahim -- like two other confirmed cases from the same area.... ??

I think we have more problems than just removal of articles at their official web sites. Something is afoot in their press as well. Remember, back when, when we found "detention" of 17 cases and that happened about twice in a 2 week period. I cannot believe the case load has miraculously dried up. No, something else has happened and it is not about granting the media freedom of expression. I am going to start a blog search soon, but after the arrests and imprisonment of bloggers lately, I do not have much hope that will be very fruitful either.

Yes, I believe the sharing of information does continue to take place and does so within diplomatic agreements - which means nothing to the public if so required by the originating country. Twelve months ago, the testing laboratory in Weybridge, England, had a website listing H5N1 samples they were testing - country of origin, date received, test outcomes etc. They were forced to close the page through diplomatic pressure.
We are like dogs at the banquet table waiting for the scraps of information. Think about the fact that there is just enough of a trickle so we don't think there is nothing going on, but we seldom hear about the cases that report positive until all testing etc is completed. Are we (and the media) being well managed or what?
Get used to it though, it is the way of the world, whether we like it or not.

I agree with our fluwiki ladies that something is afoot. What do you think?

Please put your latest Rumors here. The last one was getting stale and a little long.
Where have all the rumor mongers gone?

I have a theory that with the ability to no longer have anonymous handles the Rumor mill has dried up because:

A. No longer protection from others that may be reading.

B. Unsubstantiated rumors are more embarrassing to post when everyone knows who posts them.

C. All the juiciest rumors were made up for the enjoyment of the anonymous pleasure.

D. The only posters left on FW are the serious and studious types.

I would post a rumor here, but I haven't heard anything too good lately.

Stock Market--panflu predictor?

TPTB and the financial markets tend to get information in a priviledged fashion.

Does anyone with knowledge in that area have an opinion about the market not in the sense of how to survive a pandemic financiallly, but as a measure of how 'real' or 'imminent' the panflu threat may be?
