Prepared Parents Meeting

by: phytosleuth

Fri May 08, 2009 at 12:17:57 PM EDT

Hello out there. I'm in one of those states that hasn't yet had a case of H1N1 human-adapted swine flu. I decided that waiting for a vaccine or drug that has problems is not a good plan. Our health department is not proactive. Being a herbalist with 30 years of experience and education, I know there are lots of simple things to add to home care treatment. Lots of folks won't like that but Congress passed the DSHEA law in 1994 and Congress held alternative medicine hearings in February 2009 to learn from the experts how alternative medicine can help solve our health care crisis.

So I'm gathering some parents for an open public meeting on Mother's Day to inform and start small educational and support groups for parents.

I would appreciate your thoughtful feedback. Please feel free to use this information for your friends or community. I apologize if I've stolen phases from blogs and sites without mentioning them. It was too much to hyperlink everything.

I guess this is where I add the extended text? Not sure what that is for. Here goes.

We'll Take Care of Our Own; We Will Have No Choice

by: Into The Woods

Fri Apr 13, 2007 at 21:00:37 PM EDT

(the next phase of the discussion... SusanC's series and this diary highlight, along with DRAFT Guidelines on Ventilator Allocation from NYS DOH for Public Comment, the ethical and practical implications of not having enough [fill in blank]. - promoted by DemFromCT)

It is widely acknowledged that care and support of pandemic patients by laypeople in their own homes will constitute either a large or the largest portion of care even for the very ill during a pandemic.  Even when the words of presentations do not acknowledge this, the numbers always do.

We talk about rationing vaccine and anti-virals.  We talk about triage within the health care system and how we can stretch the surge capacity using bubble gum and bailing wire.  But who talks about those left outside the doors of the hosptials and alternative care sites and how they will make do and try to survive?  What is our message to this group that will seriously outnumber the group allowed "inside" - possibly by as much as 10 to 1?

Sick care in SIP

by: Kobie

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 11:00:40 AM EST

Home quarantine - Rev 1.0.

Lest say while SIP, someone gets sick with the Flu and no one has built up immunity or been vaccinated.

So far the flu is transmitted via water droplets. I assume these are heavy enough not to be circulated by house hold air system. So keeping them inside is safe.

Keeping the sick inside their own room with lots of disposable paper towels, baby wipes, gloves and mask for both, etc.
If not using disposable towels, then keep a hamper to put all items in.

Do not touch but change pillow case, bed sheets and bed liners every couple of days. Wash in hot water. Why? Out of habit.

  Wash thermometer between uses.

Additional fluids like water, orange juice, etc will help.

Additional calories help - this is not the time to diet.

If possible designate a bathroom for them to use.

Be careful of too many vitamin. The body can only absorb 800 to 1000 mg of Vitamin  C per hour.

Some vitamin like A,D, K and E are fat soluble and build up in the system. Yes you can get to toxic levels since the vitamin are in food as well as vitamin pill.

Other vitamins are water soluble and flushed from the system by the kidneys. Too much of these vitamins is literally pi$$ing money and resources away. There is also an interplay between vitamin and vitamin and minerals. One needs vitamin D for the uptake and use of calcium to make strong bones.

  Please see:  http://orthoinfo.aao...  and
http://www.ext.colos... and
  http://www.faqs.org/...
(cited only as reference, not as an endorsement). Note the quote "Water is a nutrient more valuable to life than food."

If the flue hits you like  pneumonia then the person will be down for a week or more. Breathing may be labored.
Heating pad with additional blankets is helpful to maintain but not exceed normal body temperature.

RDA - recommended Daily Allowance is the minimum a healthy person needs to prevent scurvy. RDA is not the amount to improve health nor restore health. Toxic levels cited at: http://www.ext.colos...

A daily bath or just having ones hair washed helps the mental health of the sick. Faith based interaction may also come into play.

Sleep, rest, physical but not emotional isolation seems the best course of action. Keep their spirits up.

If the worse should happen. Clean wrap the body. Under the best of times it takes several hours for the coroner to arrive. Tend to the living INCLUDING YOURSELF. Care givers need love and care too.

If possible keep people with different illness separate.

Pick out a spot and makes plans now. Share with family as both education and planning.

Please post any comments or suggestions. This may have been covered before.

Translate "Good Home Treatment"

by: lugon

Fri Nov 24, 2006 at 09:27:33 AM EST

(important project - new update - promoted by DemFromCT)

Update: Most panflu treatment will be home treatment - all over the world. A 17-page booklet can help many people and quite posibly save many lives. Can you translate a sentence or two? Do you know someone who can?

If so, please check this out: http://traduwiki.org... and share it with people who can help (there's an "email people who could help" box on the right in that page).  Two sentences at a time looks like a small contribution, and it is! :-)

As soon as the translation into each language is complete, all that's needed is a medical doctor who is local to that language and who steps up to tell Dr Woodson that the translation is done well.

Then the text will be converted into a PDF booklet, just like the one in English, and released for folks to use for preparedness and, eventually, response.

Please lend a hand or two!
