root cellar

There is talk in another diary about how hard it will be to live without fresh fruits and vegetables during a long-term emergency.
I am starting this diary so people here can learn about root cellaring and other means of keeping perishables fresh that don't rely on electricity.
A "root cellar" can be any space that has the right temperature and humidity to keep fruit and vegetables in limbo so that they don't ripen to the point of rotting. It can be done in a bulkhead, a basement, a barrel dug into the ground, an attic, a kneewall...in other words, just about anywhere that the conditions are right.
