Some time this evening I'll be upgrading the software on which Flu Wiki — the original wiki not this forum — runs. The new version adds some features that may come in handy for us but it does very little that would seriously affect the way we're already doing things. So I don't anticipate any problems and you won't necessarily even notice a change once I'm done. But if you do subsequently see anything that looks odd or out of place, I'd appreciate hearing about it either in a comment to this diary or by email.
And once I get working with the new version, which I'll also be working with on another project, I'll double back here and list the high points on the flip.
Edited to add link.
And edited to begin documenting new and enhanced features on the turn.

Look at recent changes on the wiki site we're all so proud of, and you'll notice quite a lot of day-to-day activity is about reverting spam: look at recent changes, and in each page where there's spam look at the history of that page, and roll back the page to what it was before spam. Not difficult once you've done it a few times.
You'll also notice who does that work. :-)
Pogge hates spam:
I will always unspam
I detest spam. My hatred for it burns with the intensity of a thousand suns.
Did I mention I'm not fond of spam?
It guess it's the same with DemFromCT and Bronco Bill, and others who may help ocassionally.
So, How could some of us help?
(I guess it would be a nice, low-key, way to enter the wikiworld, get some practice, then maybe help others add some good content, or even sketchy content that can be refined and fleshed out later.)

There's a link on the wiki's main page with the question I'm ready to help - what can I do?. It takes people to a page that's severely outdated (as of this writing).
One of the answers to that question is, please consider signing this petition, but there are other answers. What are they? How do we organise that page, i.e., what broad and specific things can people do?
This, or more likely a page with another name such as Main.Act, could be a page linked to from sites that wish to, in order to provide a menu of simple and complex things to do, to help their communities.

as I understand fluwikie originally was mainly
a wiki which was created and edited and the forum
was just a platform to discuss details of this process. However over the time the forum grew
much faster than the wiki and now the wiki
is pretty much outdated and the forum runs
with new software and is mainly contrated upon.
I found some very good birdflu pages at wikipedia
now, which made me wonder whether wikipedia isn't the better fluwiki meanwhile ?
Can we integrate/crosslink the fluwiki
into wikipedia or/and copy the wikipedia
bird flu related stuff over here to fluwiki ?

You're only as protected as the country next door - whatever "next door" means in today's JIT economies and ease of travel.
Now, there's this simple (and not thoroughly updated) wikipage with the list of countries with links to their published plans.
So maybe we could add a column or two:
- plan's document last updated on this date,
- strategy regarding closing schools (there could be a code for "1%12W" meaning "if CFR = 1% then close schools 12 weeks", etc),
- # weeks of preps recommended (no comments on that, 2 weeks, more, etc),
- etc.

I wonder what a future documentary would look like that focuses on the preparations and communications of those few people in America that saw it coming.

Over at the wiki there's structured information that you can reach through timeless menus (main page, side bar, submenus) or doing a search. Here at the forum there are conversations (more or less focused) that happen along time. So this is a conversation (a forum room) for us to talk about the structured information place (the wiki proper):

I've just upgraded the wiki to the same version of PmWiki that I applied to the old forum server a couple of months back. If anyone runs into any problems, I'd appreciate feedback in comments to this diary.
One thing wiki editors will notice right away is that the preview screen is now a separate pop-up window. There's a close button at the top and bottom when you're through admiring your handiwork. And please remember that a change summary is still required. I have to find a different way to get that message into the edit screen.
Carry on.

Wiki Work Projects
Will's diary on Proposed Process to populate Flu Wiki is still a discussion point. Before organizing it further (that's assuming folks want to be organized), we still have projects to complete. The wiki is never done.
Recent discussion areas include schools, social services/adoption and mortuary issues. Any volunteers to organize those areas should place them on the wiki in the Pandemic Preparedness -> Community Preparedness section. In the meantime, this is your community open thread. What's on your mind?

(Good content for use on the Wiki side - promoted by Bronco Bill)
This is to provide a quick reference to the common markup items used at the original Flu Wiki site as well as brief notes on creating links and applying text styles. Bear in mind that we're running a number of extensions or add-ons to PmWiki so there are items listed in the table that aren't supported in a default installation.
Last revision: 2006.12.19, 16:15 - added more items to markup table.

(thoughtful approach - comments welcomed - promoted by DemFromCT)
Objective: Stimulate discussions in key subject areas (knowledge domains) related to pandemic science, preparation, onset, and aftermath that will be converted into information on FluWiki pages. The resulting knowledge is “owned” by all, without pride of authorship concerns or limitations, that can be understood and acted upon by readers with little or no prior knowledge before coming to FluWikie.
